Water or Electrolytes? Here's What You Need

Oct 6, 2026

Water bottle?

Sports drink?

Electrolyte packet?

Walk into almost any store and hydration suddenly looks complicated.

It doesn't need to be.

At Fitness Together Georgetown, we like this rule:

Start with water. Add electrolytes when there's a reason.

Why Does Hydration Matter?

Your body uses water all day.

It helps:

Your cells work.

Your blood carries nutrients.

Your body controls temperature.

Your muscles perform.

Your body removes waste.

When you're training, your body also produces heat and loses water through sweat.

That's why hydration is part of good recovery, along with food, protein and sleep.

What Are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that help your body function.

You may recognize:

Sodium

Potassium

Magnesium

Chloride

They help control fluid balance and are important for nerves and muscles. Sodium and potassium work together in the electrical processes that allow nerve signals and muscle contractions to happen.

Water or Electrolytes?

Here's the easy version:

Regular day: Water.

Short indoor workout: Usually water.

Long workout: Electrolytes may help.

Hot DC summer + lots of sweat: Electrolytes may help.

Long endurance activity: You may benefit from both electrolytes and carbohydrates.

You don't earn extra health points by putting electrolytes in every glass of water.

How Do I Choose One?

Look at the label—especially sodium, sugar and calories.

Then think about what you're doing.

Nuun Sport provides a moderate amount of electrolytes with very few calories. Nuun Hydration

Liquid I.V. contains more sodium and offers both regular and sugar-free products. Liquid IV

LMNT is a much higher-sodium product and may be better suited to someone losing significant sodium through heavy sweating.

And sometimes a traditional sports drink makes perfect sense.

If you're exercising for a long time, the carbohydrates aren't necessarily a problem—it may be fuel.

Context matters.

Don't Forget Real Food

Electrolytes aren't something invented by supplement companies.

They're already in food.

Potatoes, bananas, beans, yogurt and many fruits and vegetables provide potassium. Nuts, seeds and whole grains can provide magnesium.

Sodium is already common in our diets.

So for many people:

Eat a balanced diet + drink water = a very good starting point.

Make Hydration Automatic

Keep a water bottle where you can see it.

Drink with meals.

Bring water to your workout.

Drink more when it's hot or you're sweating.

Use electrolytes when your activity calls for them.

Simple habits usually beat perfect hydration formulas.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to make hydration complicated.

Water is your foundation.

Electrolytes help your nerves, muscles and fluid balance.

When you're exercising longer, sweating heavily or dealing with heat, replacing electrolytes can become more useful.

The rest of the time?

Drink your water. Eat good food. Keep moving.
