Fitness Together Burlington Joins with Nashoba Learning Group to Raise Awareness and Donations for Autism

Team of Trainers and Moms to Run Boston Marathon for Autistic Children and Young Adults

Burlington, Massachusetts — February 21, 2011 — Fitness Together, Burlington, announced today that its new owner and a FT trainer will join forces with two mothers of autistic children to raise awareness and funds by running the Boston Marathon. The team of Brendan Stapleton and Peter Argiros (FT Burlington) and moms Judith Ursitti from Dover, MA and Julie Coppenrath, Clinton, MA will run to support the Nashoba Learning Group in Bedford, MA.

Nashoba Learning Group (NLG) is a non-profit educational organization committed to helping children and their families in the fight against autism. First opened in 2003, NLG provides state-of-the-art education and intervention services to children with autism and related developmental disabilities between the ages of 3 and 22, of any race, color, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin.

“We got to know two of the NLG students because they help out at our studio,” said Brendan Stapleton, new owner of FT Burlington. “Being part of our workforce has given the students an opportunity to gain experience outside of the school environment and increase their social skills.’

One of the moms, Julie Coppenrath’s 7 year old daughter, Helen, has autism and has been a student at NLG since she was 4. “NLG truly is a great school with staff dedicated to the students and their families. My daughter's team has made some amazing progress with Helen and has given this family hope for her future. I'm running the Boston Marathon as my way of thanking the school for all they do for my family and the other families of NLG.”

Similarly, Judith Ursitti’s seven year-old son, Jack, has been at NLG for three years. "I am writing the names of the beautiful students from NLG on my arms and legs with Sharpie on Marathon Monday. Their strength and determination serves as my inspiration."

Peter Argiros, Andover resident and ABA (Applied Behavioral Analyst) therapist at NLG goes on to say, “Our bond with the students has grown significantly through their visits to FT Burlington. As a trainer at FT Burlington and by working with them at NLG, I get to see their social skills develop in both environments. “

The combined team from FT Burlington and NLG has seen the amazing progress that can be made with some support. To that end, each member’s goal is to raise $5,000 and donate the $20,000 to NLG.
