2010 Boston Marathon

Posted By: Jenny Smith- Fitness Together Newtonville on 10/21/2010

The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual city marathon in the world, appearing for the first time in 1897. It ranks as one of the most prestigious running events in the world. The legendary course of the Boston Marathon has been the same throughout most of the history of the race.

It was always a dream of mine to run the Boston Marathon and I was given the opportunity last year to run the marathon with the John Hancock team. It was something I knew I would have to work hard for months to be prepared for. Most of the training was done through the winter months, which also makes it very tough. However, I spent 6 decated months to train for this race and on April 19th, 2010 I felt very prepared for this race.

The route follows 26.2 miles of winding rodes from Hopkinton to Boston. Shortly after the 25k mark the road starts going up a series of hills in Newton, the final hill being "Heartbreak Hill." This is where I hit, what runners refer to as "The Wall." I struggled through the last 5 miles and came slowly running down Beacon St. by Fenway where all my friends and family cheered me on. This pushed me to run the final mile, with one of my best friends by my side. I have never experienced such a rush of adrenaline as I did when I crossed the finish line! It was one of the biggest accomplishments I have achieved in my lifetime and it is something that I will never forget!!
