Summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy a walk, run, bike ride, or hike. However, as temperatures climb, it's important to take extra precautions to stay safe and comfortable during outdoor cardio sessions.
One of the best strategies is to exercise during the cooler parts of the day. Early mornings and evenings typically offer lower temperatures and less direct sunlight, making your workout more enjoyable and reducing the risk of overheating.
Hydration is another key factor. Be sure to drink water throughout the day, not just during your workout. If you're exercising for an extended period or sweating heavily, consider replenishing electrolytes as well.
What you wear matters, too. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing in light colors to help your body regulate temperature more effectively. A hat and sunglasses can also provide protection from the sun and improve comfort.
When planning your route, look for shaded paths or trails whenever possible. Running or walking in shaded areas can make a significant difference in how hot you feel during exercise.
It's also important to listen to your body. If you notice excessive fatigue, dizziness, nausea, or an unusually high heart rate, slow down, find a cool place to rest, and hydrate. Adjusting your pace on hotter days is a smart way to stay active while avoiding heat-related illness.
Finally, remember that outdoor cardio isn't your only option. On extremely hot or humid days, consider coming into the studio and using the cardio equipment available for clients. You'll still get a great workout while enjoying a cool, climate-controlled environment.
