Fall Is Here: How to Adjust Your Outdoor Cardio Workouts
Sep 30, 2026
After a hot summer, cooler fall temperatures can make outdoor exercise feel more comfortable—and a lot more enjoyable. Whether you prefer walking, running, cycling, hiking, or another form of cardio, fall is a great time to take your workouts outside. With a few simple adjustments, you can make the most of the changing weather while continuing to build your fitness.
Start with a longer warm-up. Cooler temperatures can mean your muscles need a little more time to loosen up. Before increasing your pace or intensity, spend 5–10 minutes walking or moving at an easy pace. Add a few dynamic movements to help prepare your body for the workout ahead.
Adjust your intensity. Without the heat and humidity of summer, your usual pace may feel easier. This can be a great opportunity to gradually increase your speed, distance, or interval work. Just remember that progress should be gradual—there’s no need to do everything at once.
Dress for the conditions. Fall weather can change quickly, so layers are your friend. Choose lightweight clothing that you can remove as you warm up. And as the days get shorter, make sure you’re visible if you’re exercising outdoors in low-light conditions.
Don’t forget hydration. Cooler weather may reduce how thirsty you feel, but your body still needs fluids. Bring water with you, especially for longer workouts.
Finally, enjoy the season! Take a new route, explore a local trail, or invite a friend to join you. The changing leaves and crisp air can provide extra motivation to get outside and stay active.
At Fitness Together, we believe fitness should fit into your life—and every season. So take advantage of the cooler weather, find an activity you enjoy, and keep moving this fall!
