Medical Condition: Arthritis

I have had arthritis in my back for years and it was becoming increasingly difficult for me to continue doing the things that I enjoyed like gardening and hiking. Any  amount of yard work or vigorous activity was causing my back to spasm and become really painful. It was also becoming increasingly more difficult to sleep.

I knew that I needed 1 on 1 training that was going to be organized around my needs and requirements. I knew that a traditional gym would not cater to my unique and individual needs. The trainers at Fitness Together were able to come up with individualized workouts that worked for me. Their motivation and support made the transition very welcoming and easy.

How has FT helped you?

Through a rigorous routine of personal training sessions 3 times a week and actively doing cardio, I have strengthened the muscles in my back as well as my entire body which has made me stronger and in return it has helped reduce the pain that I experience. Through hard work and support from my trainers, I have been able to reduce the level of pain in both my back and hips (prescription free)and now enjoy a fuller quality of life.

Medical Condition: Type II diabetes, arthritis in shoulder

50+ years of relatively sedentary life style was catching up.  Health issues (Type II diabetes) arose in the past few years.  I needed to work out for health, not for vanity.  Since I have never felt comfortable in gyms, I never kept up with it.

How has FT helped you?

The FT atmosphere is small and very supportive.   My trainer, Jen met me when I was very inactive -  bad knee, poor endurance and balance,  and we proceeded from there. She accommodates exercises for a few physical limitations I have (i.e. touchy knee, arthritis in a shoulder, etc…)…that said we don’t “skip” the exercises…we just are careful in how they are executed. 

I have experienced NO lower back strain while exercising (a common problem I’d encounter in past tries to work out at a gym).  My back feels strong and I feel my balance is improving.  My trainer has me focus on form while exercising to avoid injury.

I have been a 3 day a week attendee for 8 months already with very few exceptions.  Usually I would have long lost interest and have given up - but the one on one makes a difference.  I find it amazing that we utilize as much of the equipment as we do.  In a “normal” gym setting I would not even try to use some of the more intimidating exercise (i.e. flipping tires, heavy bag, sled, etc…).  Now I do them regularly and feel comfortable doing so.

Dave Norden

Dave Norden came to Fitness Together 40 lbs. overweight and suffering from back pain. Says trainer Brendan Stapleton, “When I first met Dave, he was lacking the confidence he needed to get fit and live a healthier life. He wasn’t ready to take that step without a trainer.” Dave began with private one-on-one training and now does Pack Small Group Training four times a week. In 8 months, Dave lost 40 lbs*, gained strength and confidence and is seeing improvements with every workout. “He’s much stronger and fitter,” says his trainer, “but at the same time he’s definitely gained a lot of the confidence that he needed to live a healthier lifestyle.” Dave’s next goal? Medical Condition: Torn bicep

Prescription: Fitness Together personal training

I had partially torn the bicep of my dominant arm shoveling snow, and wanted to strengthen surrounding muscles while being careful not to complete the tear. I also wanted to try to become more functional with the other arm. I had opted not to pursue surgery to reattach the bicep unless it fully tore. Physical therapy was out as was the lifting of “anything heavy” ever again, according to an orthopedic surgeon I had consulted.

How has FT helped you?

Thanks to Fitness Together and my trainer, James, I have achieved the goals of greater strength in both arms while not further damaging my bicep. When I came to FT I was unable to hold a cup of tea or twirl spaghetti with my left hand. Now I effortlessly lift 5 gallon bottles of water onto the dispenser without worry or concern!

The one on one attention 2 times a week is with purpose and will keep you safe from injury or further aggravation of existing conditions. The atmosphere is friendly, supportive and free of intimidation.

Pre knee replacements, I came to get in better shape so rehab would be better. Post knee replacements, I felt confident that with Fitness Together's help,  I could rebuild my leg strength and improve my conditioning. I wanted to get in shape again after about 15 years of decline and a body beat up from sports.

How has FT helped you?

The trainers here do a great job keeping me challenged and pushing me without putting my new knees or ancient body in jeopardy. Cross training works for me because it keeps things interesting. I could lift all day but left to my o wn devices I would just wander off. About 75% of the things I do here I would never do on my own. I have learned a lot.

 

Almost anything I do now I could not do before or at least not very much of it. The fact that I'm able to do box jumps now is amazing. I am truly surprised that I look forward to coming here and working out.

Linda Norden
