Boston-Area College Student and Miss America Hopeful Fights Disease and Focuses on Fitness

Jun 8, 2009

BOSTON – June 08, 2009

Brooke Kilgarriff, an aspiring Miss Minnesota, fights polycystic ovarian syndrome by focusing on health and fitness. Kilgarriff selected Fitness Together, Back Bay in Boston to help reach her fitness goals and prepare for the upcoming Miss Minnesota pageant June 20.

Kilgarriff, a student at Boston Conservatory, unexpectedly gained 20 pounds her first semester of college despite good eating and fitness habits. Following a doctor visit, she was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a disease that alters hormone levels in women. Kilgarriff learned a common side effect of PCOS is weight gain.

After struggling alone to loose the weight, Kilgarriff joined a Fitness Together studio in her hometown of St. Paul, Minn. while home from school. Because she found the one-on-one personal training in a private setting beneficial, she sought out a Boston studio within the franchise network when she transitioned back to college. There, she was not only able to achieve her goals of toning muscle and losing weight to prepare for upcoming pageants, but she also regained her health.

Largely due to her Fitness Together, Back Bay-created training sessions and nutrition plan, Kilgarriff was taken off Metformin, a prescription medicine to help manage PCOS. She credits the personal attention and strong motivation from the Fitness Together, Back Bay team as a important part of her support system in fighting this illness and staying positive during her hectic and stressful college life.

“Brooke puts her whole heart into her training sessions,” said Mike Morris, owner of Fitness Together, Back Bay. “She walks through the door with a great attitude and is an amazing young woman. We are so proud of all she has achieved and look forward to seeing her pageantry advance to the highest level where she can serve as an inspiration and role model to others.”

Kilgarriff, who currently holds the title of Miss Twin Cities for 2009, spent this past academic year preparing for her next level of competition, Miss Minnesota, and dreams of progressing to the Miss America pageant in 2010. As part of her training Kilgarriff visited Fitness Together, Back Bay three to four times per week. Now back in St. Paul, she trains on her own using the workouts and nutrition plans her Fitness Together, Back Bay trainers prepared for her.

“I am so happy with the results I achieved training at Fitness Together, Back Bay,” she said. “I am swimsuit-ready for my upcoming pageant, but also have truly made a life change where fitness, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle will always be part of my life. I thank the team at Fitness Together, Back Bay for holding me accountable, making my training sessions a priority, and more importantly for their consistent encouragement and support.”

Kilgarriff plans to resume training at Fitness Together, Back Bay when she returns to school.
