Question: "What is the purpose of Foam Rolling?"

Christian Agudelo, ACSM - CPT

Foam Rolling or self-myofascial release is used to help alleviate pain from sore or tight muscles. It is essentially a deep tissue massage as it targets adhesions or scar tissue in the body and if done properly you will feel the release of tension right away. Foam rolling creates more blood flow to the body and can improve mobility as well as increase muscle recovery. When you sit or lay on the foam roller try to find those sore and tight trigger points and massage the area in question. This may be painful and may be very uncomfortable, but if you can tolerate the pain it will feel so much better afterward.

Foam rolling is an inexpensive alternative to massage therapy and can be done anywhere as long as you have a foam roller and an open space. Foam rolling is extremely effective and should be in your fitness program at all times. Consult with your trainer on how to properly use the foam roller so you will always experience the great benefits that it provides to your muscles.

Foam Rolling, otherwise known as self-myofascial release is a warm up & recovery technique used by many health professionals. It is also just a fancy name for a self-massage. The idea behind foam rolling is to release any muscle tightness or trigger points (knots).

To perform, you set your body into proper position and apply pressure to specific parts of your body. Targeting the trigger points or tight muscles, you are in control of the intensity as you feel exactly what you are doing to your body. As you begin to release the trigger points in your body, you will reestablish proper movement and pain free patterns, which is ideal to make the most of your workouts. Foam Rolling is not the most comfortable thing to do but you will reap the benefits of it afterwards.
