Life Beyond the Scale

Mar 26, 2026

The dreaded scale. For so long, health experts have touted the importance of the scale and knowing how much our body weighs. Specific numbers in pounds are pretty much ingrained in our heads for what’s a healthy weight, how much we should weigh, and what’s an unhealthy weight.

What does life look like beyond the scale? Are there other parameters we can use to measure our health? Are these metrics a better measure of health than how much our body weighs?

If you had the inkling to say yes to those questions, you’re on the right track. Here’s why…

We, as people, are so obsessed with how much our body weighs. It’s an easy metric to track, there’s lots of data on under/overweight individuals, and it’s a simple number that tells us whether we’re doing good or bad with our health.

Sounds great, but this pesky number on the scale is one of the last metrics you should pay attention to when measuring your health. Don’t believe me? Amputate your leg, and then weigh yourself. You’ll be 20+ pounds lighter, but feel the exact same. The only information that the scale provides us is how strongly gravity is pulling your body downward.

We sacrifice important metrics of health for a number on the scale. If we think the number on the scale is high, we subtract important nutrients from our bodies to bring us down to a number we like. In the process of eating less, we might notice drops in strength, poorer sleep quality, and constant cravings. If constantly chasing a number is making you sacrifice strength, sleep, and well-being, it’s time to rethink how we track our health.

Instead, we should focus on the metrics tied to how we actually feel. The irony is that once we shift our attention to better sleep, greater strength, and lower stress, our weight tends to fall into place naturally. Don’t let the driving force of your health be measured by a number — measure it by how you are feeling.

Life beyond the scale is far more liberating and effective. When we stop letting a single number dictate our worth and instead focus on real indicators of vitality — better sleep, steady energy, greater strength, improved mood, and how our bodies actually feel and perform — sustainable health naturally follows. The scale may still move in the right direction over time, but it becomes a side effect rather than the goal. True progress isn’t found in pounds lost or gained. It’s measured by how alive, capable, and confident we feel every single day. Ditch the obsession with the scale and start measuring what truly matters.
