How do I Choose the Right Exercise Facility/ Trainer?

Sep 10, 2012

Exercise and Wellness is important to all of us, no matter what the fitness level. But for those who have decided to begin an exercise routine, what exactly is right for you?

A lot should go into your decision as to whom or where you are going to conduct your fitness program. Nowadays there are so many different avenues to go down to reach your wellness goals. The many different types of public gyms range from Latitude’s to the YMCA to the Beverly Athletic Club. Smaller facilities such as Cross Fit and Curves offer a more personalized approach, and Fitness Together, Get in Shape for Women, and 1 to 1 Body Scapes focus specifically on personal training.

Improving your health is a very personal, important part of life and where you do it should not be taken lightly. You should feel comfortable and safe at whichever establishment you exercise at and should receive the value of service that you pay for.

So where do you start?

Searching on the internet for local business in the wellness field can narrow your search greatly. You can learn a lot more about each avenue of fitness that you could go down by reading a bit on each business’s website. There should be videos, photos, fitness articles, and even bios of the employees.

After this, identify if you are capable, knowledgeable, and accountable enough to conduct your program by yourself or with a friend. If this is the case – then take a tour and, if possible, schedule a consultation with one of your local public gym facilities such as the YMCA. You should look closely to see how clean the facility is and what types of equipment are available. Some important question to ask would be: What are your hours? Are there trainers available to show me where pieces of equipment are located? If I have an issue – with whom do I speak with? Are there options for paying in full or paying a monthly membership? If you feel the rates applicable with the facility are within your budget and justifiable – then you’re good to go!

If working out on your own is not right for you – put a call or stop by an establishment that focuses on personal training. This may be small group training, private 1 to 1 training, or larger exercise classes such as spin. Just as you would do with a public gym facility; put a call in, send an email, or even stop by a local business that specializes in one of these services.

The process to find the right personal trainer may be a bit longer because you will most certainly want to meet and develop some rapport with who will be instructing you and designing your fitness routine. As mentioned above, you should always feel comfortable and safe wherever you are exercising, and in this case – with WHOMever you are exercising with.

Just like you would do if you were searching for a public facility, take a tour and schedule a meeting with the business you have contacted. A consultation process should be recommended where you will learn more about the programs offered and where you can develop rapport with the employees. This may extend the process as compared with a public gym because the program may be much more customized to you. You should always ask: Is the trainer certified or possess a degree in the field? How does scheduling work? What are the fine details of the program? Are there options as to methods of payment? As mentioned above as well, if the rates applicable with the program are within your budget and justifiable – then you’re good to go!

Making sure you selected the right place can be a little nerving-wracking, but that is why a delicate process can help ensure that you have done your duties and made the right choice.
