Eating for a Healthy Heart
The American Heart Association
suggests eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, poultry, fish, and low fat dairy products. These foods contain important vitamins and minerals, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, fiber, antioxidants and anti-inflamatories, and mono and poly unsaturated fats. All of these work together in your body to increase HDL (good) cholesterol, lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, and keep total cholesterol and triglycerides within normal limits; which in turn decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke. They also protect cells from damage due to free radicals and keep your digestive system healthy.
Examples of heart healthy foods include apples, avocados, spinach, oats, olive oil, red wine (in moderation), salmon, soy, skim milk, tomatoes, and walnuts. Be sure to include these in your meals and snacks daily!
