You Should Go and Love Yourself

On this week before Valentine’s Day, we want to know: what do you LOVE?  We’re guessing more than a few things fill your mind – your family, reading, skiing, your pets, your mom’s lasagna, friends, the rain, flowers, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and the list goes on and on, right?  What about Y-O-U?  Can you put YOU on your list of your most-loved? 

Self-love and self-care are not about narcissism or conceit.  Self-care is not selfish.  Self-love is about respecting your body, positive self-talk, and taking action to make your body healthy.  And because you’re the only one who is ultimately responsible for your own health and happiness, you’d better put self-love on your priority shortlist.   Need some self-care motivation?    
 

  • Self-love makes you happier.  You can recognize the charisma and confidence in others when they truly love themselves.  It’s attractive and enviable, right?   Pair that with the satisfaction of meeting your own needs, and you’re guaranteed an extra spring in your step, and a greater level of overall happiness.
     
  • Self-love makes your relationships better.  If you love and respect yourself, you won’t stand for poor treatment from significant others, friends, or family members.  Better yet, if you’ve got kids, your own self-care makes for GREAT role-model material. 
     
  • Self-care makes your outlook better.  If you’ve ever been in love, think about the early days of the romance, when everything seemed a little sunnier and brighter.  Falling in love with yourself can do the same thing, all-night phone conversations aside.  When you love yourself you can look at your circumstances in a more positive light.  You’re more likely to give yourself, your circumstances, and others around you, a little grace.
     

Our favorite way to practice self-love?  Regular exercise, of course.  When you exercise, you literally show care and love for nearly every part of your body.  Not only do your muscles, bones, and skin look better and get healthier, but your mind and mood get a whole lot better, too.  And lucky you - your trainer at Fitness Together is a great resource for helping you to develop a healthy self-care practice.  Whether regarding your diet or your workouts, he or she can challenge you, encourage you, and inspire you, all while helping you to be your strongest and healthiest self. 

If someone were to sneak a peek at your calendar and your expense report, what would they say is the most important thing to you?  What would they see as your priorities?  Do the things that take up your time and money represent what you want in your life?  Making regular appointments with your trainer is a great first step to prioritizing your own self-love and self-care.  

Sure, Valentine’s Day is often all about showing others how much you care about them.  However, this year we challenge you to shake things up a little with dramatic steps toward increasing and improving your self-care practice.   After all, you can’t really love others until you really love yourself.
