Rediscover the Joy of Movement: Why Exercise Should be Fun
For many people, exercise is something they do begrudgingly, as a means to an end, whether that's weight loss, increased strength, or better health. But it doesn't have to be that way. Exercise can and should be enjoyable, and finding ways to move your body that bring you pleasure can be the key to sticking with a fitness routine for the long term.
When we think of exercise, we often think of the stereotypical gym workout: pounding away on the treadmill or lifting weights in a sterile, fluorescent-lit room. But there are so many other ways to move your body, and it's worth exploring what works for you. Maybe you love dancing, or playing basketball, or taking long walks in nature. Whatever it is, find something that makes you happy and commit to doing it regularly.
One reason why it's important to find joy in movement is that when we're having fun, we're more likely to push ourselves harder and challenge ourselves in new ways. When you're enjoying yourself, you're not thinking about how hard you're working, or how many calories you're burning, or how much time is left on the clock. You're just in the moment, fully engaged with your body and your surroundings.
Another benefit of finding joy in movement is that it can help shift your mindset from one of punishment to one of self-care. When we approach exercise as a chore or a punishment for eating too much or not being fit enough, we're more likely to feel resentful and to skip workouts. But when we approach movement as something that brings us pleasure and helps us feel good in our bodies, we're more likely to make it a priority in our lives.
So, how can you rediscover the joy of movement? Here are a few tips:
-
Try new things: Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. You might discover a new passion you never knew you had.
-
Move with friends: Exercise is more fun when you're doing it with someone else. Find a workout buddy or join a fitness class where you can meet new people.
-
Set goals: Having a specific goal to work towards can be motivating and help you stay on track. But make sure the goal is something that excites you, not something you feel like you "should" do.
-
Focus on how you feel: Instead of obsessing over numbers on a scale or a fitness tracker, pay attention to how your body feels. Do you feel energized? Strong? Happy? That's what really matters.
Remember, exercise shouldn't feel like a punishment. It should be something you look forward to, something that brings you joy and makes you feel good. So go out there and rediscover the joy of movement!
