Q: How long have you been with Fitness Together, and how often are you working out both inside and outside of the studio?
I have been with Fitness Together for about ten months. I work out twice a week in the studio or virtually, and once a week on my own at home. I also go on many walks and runs on the Sligo Creek Trail and around Takoma Park, as well as hiking when I can on weekends.
Q: What are the results you've seen so far?
My strength and balance have improved and so has my endurance when running. I have progressed to heavier weights, and more complex routines which I couldn't have done when I started.
Q: What can you attribute mostly to your success so far? What hurdles did you have to get over in order to succeed?
Working out regularly has made a big difference. My trainers, Erin and Clayton have been so positive and encouraging, and that helps keep me going. I had difficulties in the beginning because I had never done resistance training before and I don't exactly have an athletic build! I had to be careful to avoid injuries. Fitting a workout into my schedule was another challenge, and at first I had to push myself to work out in the evenings, but one silver lining of the pandemic has been that with a telework schedule I have time to work out when I am at my best.
Q: What are some of your goals with FT moving forward?
I want to continue working on strength and balance. Also, I was treated for early stage breast cancer last year and now take a drug to prevent recurrence which has the side effect of thinning bones. So another goal is to continue with resistance training to help prevent osteoporosis.
Q: Anything else you would like to share with others looking to hit their goals?
Just to keep going at your own pace, and don't get discouraged if progress is slow at first. It takes time, but you will get stronger if you work out consistently, and you will have more energy in general.
