Client of the Month: March - Mark Mayer

Q: How long have you been with Fitness Together, and how often are you working out both inside and outside of the studio?

I started training with Fitness Together 6 months ago, three times a week. I do 30 mins cardio after each session, and try to do cardio twice more during the week at home. Recently I purchased a bench, yoga mat and some dumbbells to work out at home. On vacations I like to do long day hikes, but that’s the extent of my recreational sports, so working out with a trainer has really had an impact and is my major form of exercise.

Q: What are the results you've seen so far?

My major goal was to lose weight and increase fitness. I’ll be 65 next month; as I get older I’d like to maintain health and mobility. When I started training I weighed 193 pounds. Currently I’m at 177 pounds; my cardiac performance has increased substantially; my resting heart rate fallen to 62; and I just feel healthier and stronger.

My belly is shrinking, and I’m developing muscle definition for the first time in my life. I had not been in a gym before starting with Fitness Together, and would never have found the motivation to achieve this on my own without a trainer.

Q: What can you attribute mostly to your success so far? What hurdles did you have to get over in order to succeed?

When I come to the gym my goal is to work hard and get the most out of each session, but that’s easy to say and harder to achieve on my own. My trainers, and especially Shay who I’ve worked with for several months now, deserve most of the credit for pushing me to achieve my goals. The exercise routines they come up are challenging, exercise different muscle groups, and help keep me interested. The only hurdles I’ve faced are that some days I just feel lazy, but because Shay keeps pushing me, even on days like that I get a good work out. My other challenge has been stiffness in different muscles, but Clark showed me an article on how to use a foam roller to massage different muscle groups, and that has helped a lot.

Q: What are some of your goals with FT moving forward?

I’d like to lose more weight, and continue to increase strength. I’ve also realized that even to maintain what I’ve achieved so far will require ongoing work in the gym. The whole exercise thing is still new to me, but FT has proven to be a great way of getting fit.

Q: Anything else you would like to share with others looking to hit their goals?

Weighing my self daily, and plotting the results on a graph really helped me see my progress. I do this 1st thing when I get up before breakfast. My weight fluctuates a bit, but it’s very encouraging to see a downwards trend, and much better than trying to remember what I weighed a few days ago!

If you have time, try and do cardio after every session with your trainer; you are already in the gym so take advantage of it.


Play with the Polar Beat app. I use it when hiking and has GPS tracking to show where you are, as well as calories burned, heart rate, and how long you have been walking. Its also interesting to see how your body responds to different exercises during a circuit with FT.
