Client of the Month - May: Elisa Massimino
May 12, 2020
Elisa, we're so proud of you for winning our Client of the Month award! You've always worked hard, but the team was especially impressed with how you stepped up your virtual workouts in the face of the challenging time we are all living through right now. You're an inspiration to other clients, as well as to the team. Thank you for your hard work and keep it up, you're a rockstar!
How long have you been with Fitness Together, and how often are you working out with FT and outside of the studio during COVID-19?
I've been with Fitness Together for more than a dozen years--the longest I've stuck with any exercise program ever! The studio and trainers have become an important part of my life. I was worried that the COVID-19 shut-down would break my routine. But I've been training online now for weeks, and it's working great. I have two one-on-one sessions and one PACK class every week. I'm also getting out for socially-distant hikes about twice a week, which is something new for me. Plus an intensive 10-minute core workout that my college-aged kid designed for my husband which we do together on the days I'm not training with FT. I actually think I'm exercising more now than I did before the shut-down!
What are some of the results you've seen so far?
For me, the benefits have been amazing all along, and I notice them even more now that I'm older. I'm stronger than I was 15 years ago, have better balance, am staying hydrated (a big change for me), and have greater endurance. All the things I do in my daily life--climbing stairs, carrying heavy grocery bags, lifting my brother's young kids--are easier. And the benefits are not just physical. I am more resilient mentally and emotionally, which is particularly helpful now with all the pandemic-related changes to our routines.
What can you attribute mostly to your success so far? What hurdles did you have to get over in order to succeed?
A couple of things really helped me, especially when I was getting started. One was changing the way I was thinking about exercise. For me, it helped to think of investing in my health and fitness not as an indulgence but as a part of my job and my duty to others. I can't be a good leader, mother, daughter, sister, wife, or colleague if I'm not strong and healthy. So FT is a "must have" for me, not a "nice to have." That helped me justify to myself the financial and time investment. And the other is the sense of community I feel with the FT folks--trainers and even the other clients. I've had a lot of different trainers over the years I've been with FT, and it's amazing how terrific and interesting they've all been. I learn something different from each of them, and I feel like they're personally invested in my health and success.
What are some of your goals with FT moving forward?
I'd like to improve my cardio fitness, which has always been my weak spot. I'm thinking of starting to do some light jogging now that the weather's nice. I'd also like to make some small tweaks to my diet to include more fruits and vegetables.
