Virtual Training 101
By Joanna Morehead, Studio Manager & Trainer, Fitness Together Rancho Bernardo
Everyone's life has flipped upside down over the past few months, and we’ve had to swiftly rethink any semblance of what a "normal" routine looks like. Now that restaurants, malls, and other organizations have been shut down to curb the epidemic, you probably find yourself stuck to the couch more than usual and rethinking your fitness program. Maybe you find yourself thinking about it while sleeping in, or having that 3rd after-dinner snack...or working through lunch when you used to head off to the gym.
Though we all must follow social distancing, it doesn’t mean we have to slack off and stop moving.
So, if you’re someone like me who craves social connection and finds comfort in being able to high-five your neighbor after a plank challenge, what do you do?
Have no fear, virtual training is here. To stay.
Working out and staying healthy while stuck at home can be difficult — but not impossible. A little at-home HIIT, Yoga, Strength or Pilates might be a great option to explore. A number of fitness companies and studios are offering virtual classes so that people can still get their fitness fix at home. Exercising not only keeps you fit, but gives you that much needed mental break from the monotony of staying indoors, watching the news, or being in close-quarters with people you might need a little “time-out” from.
All you need is a yoga mat and a high-quality Wi-Fi connection, and you can join live streams as well as pre-recorded digital classes from anywhere. It’s like having your personal trainer with you at your home.
Here are some of the benefits virtual training can offer:
Scheduling Flexibility
Whether at home, in a hotel, or in-laws homes during holidays, virtual workouts allow you to follow a sweat session in privacy, at your own pace and time. Not a morning person? Need that after lunch boost? Only have a window before dinner? Not a problem. With hundreds of classes to choose from, one can find online training any hour of the day. This was not the case with big box gyms and studios who couldn’t always accommodate corporate employees who work erratic hours. All you need to do is roll out of bed, set up your mat, and start your workout. No driving or masking-up needed!
Formats Galore
With virtual classes, the options are limitless. From Zumba, spin, barre, and body pump to mat pilates and stretch – there is something for everyone. Viewers can experience an authentic workout with a specialized instructor, at any time of the day they want, with a format (and personality) that suits them perfectly. Don’t like being yelled at? Need a little more push through those HIIT sessions? Hate the instructors playlist? With virtual training, you are more likely to find a class and trainer that suits your interests, style, and energy levels.
Trainer Experience & Variety
Frequent exercisers can quickly fall into a fitness rut. And beginners might need more 1:1 guidance and modifications. Virtual classes have the most qualified instructors conducting sessions to meet you where you’re at. These trainers provide detailed instructions and exercises so that you get the most out of the workout while never having to worry about keeping up with the Jillian Michaels wanna-be next to you. And if you’re not vibing with the instructor, you don’t have to feel awkward walking out of class. Just log off and try someone different.
Social Connection
Even though you aren’t physically sweating side-by-side on the reformer or squat racks with other people doesn’t mean you’re alone. Even if you are streaming solo from the comfy vibe of your house, by virtually working out with others, you will experience the advantages of real-time workout sessions, with a sense of accountability, increased endorphins (hello happiness!) and external motivation. Many classes will allow you a screen view to see others working out along with you - so if you get bored, you can always pick up home decor ideas or admire someone’s new labradoodle. And you might even make a few new friends!
Confidence Building
For those who don’t like the idea of exercising in a large group class, virtual classes are an excellent way of building your confidence in a more private environment, at a pace that suits you. Just combine your preferred music, wear something comfortable, and get an effective workout even within the confines of your home. Remaining quarantined for such a prolonged period of time is forcing us to change the ways we stay fit and active, and can affect our self-esteem if we’ve been less than consistent with our routine. But virtual fitness can keep us energetic, focused, connected, and invested in ourselves—wherever we, whatever we want to achieve.
Self-Care
During this unprecedented time, so much is uncertain, and emotions are running high. Many of us are experiencing increased anxiety, depression, over-medicating, overeating and loneliness. It’s important not to neglect our body, mind, and spiritual wellness. And virtual training can be one of the best remedies for self care. If you’re trapped in a stream of worry, disconnect your mind from drama while being more mindful. Moving your body and focusing on the workout will release endorphins, regulate serotonin and curb your appetite. By carving out time each day for self care, you're acting with compassion towards yourself. And we could all use a bit more of that these days.
