Bob Wilson, husband of Dona Wilson, owner of Fitness Together Escondido in the Felicita Towne Centre, was recently featured in the North County Times for his scheduled 1,200 mile kayak trip to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The quest, now called "Paddle for the Battle" is a 6-week long kayak trip Wilson will be embarking on with his kayaking partner Bill Sims on October 1st. The trip will begin in San Diego and end 1,200 miles down the coast of the Baja Peninsula.
"Every penny we raise for the trip will go toward the American Cancer Society." says Wilson, "we are paying all of the out-of-pocket costs ourselves." So why set out on such a grueling trip? Bob's idea for the trip was inspired by his mother, who passed away of pancreatic cancer, and mother-in-law, who passed away from lung cancer this May. "If other groups can raise money to fight cancer, I thought 'why not a kayaking trip'". So far Wilson and Sims have raised over $11,000 and hope to reach their goal of $15,000 before they leave for their trip. "I'm so proud of them both", says Dona Wilson, owner of Fitness Together Escondido, "They are so passionate have researched the trip so well and I'm extremely confident in their ability to handle the kayaking."
