1. What has been your biggest success since working out at FT?
I would have to say my general "state of health" has been my biggest success since joining FT. My motivation to join in the first place was based upon a visit to my Dr. for an annual physical and his warnings of where my life was headed (and how many issues I was going to have) if I didn't make some major changes. I was overweight, pre-diabetic and living a very sedentary lifestyle. Since starting to workout at Fitness Together I have enjoyed everything from how my clothes fit to getting compliments from people on how much better I look since I have been working out at FT. But, it really comes down to how much more energy I have and how much better I feel all the time now as compared to before. I have lost a little over 20 pounds since starting and have shed several inches off my waist. I am not in this for some quick result that may not be sustainable. It has been a conscious choice to change my entire lifestyle and I am very happy to have healthy, long term results that I will be able to continue to maintain years from now.
2. What lifestyle changes have you made outside of your workouts to help you in your success?
After meeting with Blair and having the discussion around nutrition and diet I have been able to cut out many things that were literally killing me. Now, don't get me wrong, I still love food and love to eat just about anything. I'm better prepared now to do so in moderation and to think twice about some of the choices I make.
I have also become more active outside of just attending my workouts at FT. My career requires that I spend a lot of time on airplanes and staying in hotels and even when not traveling I spend most days "trapped" behind a desk or conference room table. I have been much more motivated to get out of the hotel room and hit the gym for a quick workout or even get out on the street and go for a nice hard walk to keep from just sitting in the room after a day of work. My choices around food and drink have also changed dramatically. I am able to eat much healthier now and I have the knowledge of which food groups to steer clear of and am much more focused on making the healthy choice.
3. What has been your favorite aspect about working out at FT?
I joined with my wife, Dawn, and I would have to say that this was a key decision to raise my enjoyment level. This isn't just something I do for myself. She and I are in it together! I was very concerned about how she would take to the working out and whether or not she would stick with it. The trainers at Fitness Together are so great to work with that she and I both have felt totally at ease and comfortable with all aspects of the experience. We compare notes constantly on what we have been doing at each session and how we like working with various trainers. It has proven to be a catalyst for success for both of us.
I have a background in athletics and I have to say that one of the barriers to beginning a fitness regimen for me in the past was that I just didn't like working out! Exercise for the sake of exercise was just flat out boring to me. I know that without the personal approach given by the trainers at FT I would not have been as successful as I have been in obtaining my goals thus far. I like the variety that comes from working with each of the trainers. I have someone who has the plan worked out when I walk in the door. I don't have to stand in some mega gym and be concerned about where to start or what to do or for that matter how to properly use some piece of exercise equipment that looks like it was designed by NASA.
4. What advice would you give to someone with the same goals as you for sticking to a program?
Be honest with yourself and the trainers about what your goals are. Chances are you didn't get out of shape overnight so it may take time to start seeing and feeling the positive results you want to see. Make the changes to your lifestyle outside of just the workouts that will help ensure your success. Eating and drinking habits are the easy ones but also getting off the couch more. Going for a walk around the neighborhood or just generally being more active. This was key for me. I would also say that if you have someone to share the experience with you will likely be more successful as well. I know that having my wife involved as been great for me.
5. Who would you want to receive the same benefits as you?
I would say anyone and everyone who is sitting there right now knowing that they need to do something but, they just don't know WHAT they need to do or how to get started.
I have a great life and a family that I dearly love with all my heart. I want to spend as much time in this life as I can with them so I had to find a way to ensure I was doing the things I needed to do.
The program at Fitness Together is perfect for me. I have someone to plan my exercise, evaluate my progress, teach me proper techniques, discuss my goals and objectives and hold me accountable.
