Are Your Coworkers Sabotaging You?
Jul 8, 2014
I recently read an article on the ACE fitness website titled “When Coworkers want to be your Co-eaters.” This article applies not only to eating with coworkers but also with friends and family. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a client say, “Well, I was sticking to my nutrition plan until I went out with friends, family, etc. for lunch this week,” or “My spouse made a pizza for dinner so that’s what I had to eat”.
What clients don’t realize is that you DO have a choice in what you eat! Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t indulge every now and then, but just be smart about it. Most of our indulging and overeating is usually a result of social eating. You shouldn’t feel guilty when you’d rather snack on apple slices and almond butter while your coworkers chow down on doughnuts. You know your body and how these foods affect you when you consume them…think about that the next time you feel tempted.
Another tip is to ask for support from your coworkers as well as your friends and family. If they know that weight loss and a healthy lifestyle is important to you then they will be less likely to offer you unhealthy food choices. In the article, they also suggest that if your boss/coworker absolutely insists you try his wife’s cookies or brownies, take them with you, but share with others at the office and with your family members.
Lastly, always keep a drawer at work filled with healthy snacks of your own. This will make turning down those sweet treats offered to you or purchasing those chips from the vending machine much easier. Living a healthy lifestyle is not always easy, but with a little willpower and careful planning anyone can do it!
