Remember the good old days? When you knew precisely how far you had walked simply because you reached your destination? And how much energy you burned, because you promptly fell asleep when you got there?
If you don’t, it’s likely the colorful wristband you’re wearing can pull up a Wikipedia page about those long ago stone ages, while simultaneously keeping you informed of your latitude, longitude, heart rate, how many steps you’ve taken in a day, and more.
It’s a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that each and every facet of our day-to-day existences has become inundated with tech, and physical fitness is no exception. Which is why it’s not entirely surprising that – in a repeat performance of last year – wearable technology once again tops the list of hot fitness trends for 2017.
While there are a number of outlets that have offered prognostications about the next big thing in fitness for the New Year, the American College of Sports Medicine seems to have taken the most scientific approach. Their Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2017 polled more than 1,800 health and fitness professionals across the globe on 42 potential trends, with the top 20 being published in the organization’s Health & Fitness Journal.
While the complete list of fitness trends for 2017 can be found on the ACSM website, here’s a glance at the top 10:
Body weight training
High-intensity interval training
Educated, certified, and experienced fitness professionals
Exercise is Medicine®
Exercise and weight loss
From fitness tracking watches that are waterproof, to those fashionable enough to wear to a wedding (even – or maybe especially – if it’s yours), gadgets that gauge our every move seem to be here to stay.
And while these electronic marvels provide a perfect supplement to a physical fitness program (and make a great gift, to boot), wearable tech – no matter how advanced – should never take the place of one-on-one personal training.
Coming in at number four on ACSM’s list of fitness trends for 2017, “Educated, certified, and experienced fitness professionals” didn’t fare too poorly, but considering that such professionals are a key component – if not the key component - to achieving many other trends on the list (exercise and weight loss, group training, and more), it’s a wonder it didn’t rank higher.
At Fitness Together Ellicott City, our trainers offer an ideal combination of aerobic exercise and strength training, balanced by a common sense nutrition program that is based on scientific truth. It’s all part of our belief in providing exceptional personal training that is fueled by enthusiasm, knowledge, care, personalization, accountability, and support.
