The Younger Next Year Principles, Part 2
Nov 22, 2013
I’ve been talking about the book “Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You’re 80 And Beyond” by Chris Crowley and Henry Lodge, MD in several recent blog posts.
In my last post about how to be Younger Next Year, we covered the first three rules. Let’s look at the last four rules and see how they connect to it all.
Rule 4 – Spend less than you make. While this may not seem like an obvious rule for being healthier as you age, living with constant financial stress will take its toll on your health! With life expectancies increasing, people are spending more years living from retirement income. Once you hit retirement age, living on what is often a fixed income while prices continue to climb can be hard. Save and invest as much as you can afford before retirement and continue to track and manage your money after retirement to avoid this stressor as much as possible.
Rule 5 – Quit eating crap. Cut out the things that you know you shouldn’t be eating – fast food, trans fats, refined starches, etc. Make sure to give your body the good food and other nutrients it needs to keep your system healthy and in good repair.
Rule 6 – Care. Find things that you are passionate about and go out and do them. Take your healthier body (from following rules 1 through 3) out for a spin and don’t be a couch potato. Care about yourself, your body, and your life. Continue to strive for a great quality of life each and every day.
Rule 7 – Connect and commit to others. Having something that connects us to others contributes to our continued health. Exercise your social skills and share your time and knowledge with others through volunteering or participating in a club, for example. Having a healthy social network can improve your years, senior or otherwise!
Need help with rule #5? I can’t say enough about our Nutrition Together program. This 6-week program covers a variety of nutritional topics and includes access to a website with weekly tips, recipes, an online accountability journal, and more. You might be surprised at what you don’t know about nutrition! It’s very competitively priced, so call 410-750-2228 today to find out more.
