Albert Einstein once said, “If you don’t have time to do something right, when are you going to have time to do it over?”
Einstein was a theoretical physicist, not a physical trainer – and yet, he may have been on to something.
His quote is perhaps the forefather of the familiar adage, “do something right, or don’t do it at all,” and its roots in regards to personal trainer services run deep.
It is a trainer’s job to equip his or her clientele with exceptional guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback. But perhaps chief among the agreement – and the one personal trainer service you should never ignore – is the implementation of proper form.
Proper form defines the body’s alignment, range of motion, and muscle tension in relation to a chosen exercise, and it impacts the entirety of the fitness experience. Put simply, if your body is not moving in a manner appropriate to the exercise, itself, you are wasting precious money, energy, and time – on behalf of all parties involved.
Improper form can also result in:
- Injury: Often experienced during weight training, injuries occur when excessive weight strains or tears tendons, muscles, and joints due to the misalignment of the body when lifting. Using lighter weights and proper body positioning as instructed by your personal trainer, is far better than attempting to take on more than you can handle. This is not only dangerous, but unproductive. The back is particularly at risk, due to the spine.
- Minimized results: When an exercise is performed poorly, lacking appropriate follow-through, the intended muscle groups receive a lackluster workout – if they receive a workout at all.
- Inadequate breathing. Form facilitates oxygen, plain and simple. It opens airways and promotes easier breathing, warding off issues with your heart and blood pressure. There’s also this simple fact: If you’re not breathing, you certainly aren’t exercising.
Part of any quality personal trainer service is helping the trainee understand the mechanics, or “the why” of it all. For instance, realizing that warming up prior to a workout increases the oxygen flow to your muscles and readies them for productive exertion, helps to make the effort that much more worthwhile.
At Fitness Together Ellicott City, our certified trainers help each and every client understand how all exercises should be completed, how to utilize equipment efficiently and safely, and how to maximize workouts, while increasing speed and reducing the risk of injury.
