Many people dig in during the winter, neglecting their workout routines as a result of the frigid temperatures, hectic schedules, and the welcoming coziness of home. Then, when the sun begins to shine, we all make a mad dash back to the gym hoping to burn off just enough pounds by Memorial Day.
Faced with this time crunch, beach bound vacationers tend to panic and slip into starvation mode while overcompensating with too much exercise.
If this sounds like you – slow down. Take things one step at a time.
If you’ve been completely dormant over the last six months, make sure to check in with your family doctor before launching into a strenuous exercise program once again. Consider starting with a daily 30-minute walk to get your body accustomed to the idea that it is moving again. Then talk to your trainer about individualized personal training to get you back on your feet. He or she can give you advice in how to transition back into exercise mode.
Here are some starters:
- Zero in on realistic goals. Are you aiming for a trimmer body when you step out on to the beach in a bathing suit, or are you hoping to build your endurance and stamina so that you can enjoy some fun in the sun with your family without getting worn out 20 minutes after leaving the house? Either objective is completely valid, but will require completely different methods – and exercises – to achieve. Your personal trainer will be able to custom-tailor a regimen that works towards the results you crave. It is important to keep in mind that results won’t happen overnight. But with diligence and effort, you should gradually begin to see changes within weeks.
- Make healthier eating choices. Nutrition often takes a one-two punch during the winter holidays. But now that spring is here, so are fruit stands and farmers’ markets and entrepreneurs selling fresh corn and tomatoes out of the back of a pickup on the side of the road. Frequent them. Try new fruits and vegetables. And talk to your nutritionist about reestablishing a balanced diet.
- Prioritize. As summer grows near, our days quickly become filled with our kids’ extracurricular activities and camps, family vacations, and more. Commit to an individualized personal training schedule and stick to it. Repetition breeds results. Signing up for individualized personal training will help to hold you accountable.
- Wake up earlier. Reprogram yourself to be a morning person. Jumpstart your metabolism and get an early workout in before your day gets out of hand.
