3 Summer Vacation Activities That Actually Burn Calories

Joan Schnorf

If you’re dedicated to personal training, you may regret missing sessions during your summer vacation. After a week or two without your personal trainer pushing you to reach your limits, won’t you take a step backward?

Vacations get a bad rap for contributing to laziness and unhealthy behaviors in general. But many activities associated with summer vacations can be huge calorie-burners.

This summer, you can have fun while staying fit. Don’t fret about missing your personal training when you can burn calories with these activities.

(1) Swimming

Whether you’re a pool rat or an ocean enthusiast, you’ll burn lots of calories simply by gliding through the water of your choice. Swimming uses your entire body, and it’s low-impact, making it a great way to reduce stress. Be safe, and take a dip only when there’s a lifeguard on duty.

(2) Walking

Whether you’re strolling leisurely down an ocean-side boardwalk or trotting to the next thrill ride at the amusement park, you’ll be improving your cardiovascular fitness while going easy on your joints. Remember to take breaks as needed, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

(3) Traveling

The most disappointing part of a vacation is packing your suitcases. But packing and hauling luggage – particularly heavy and bulky items – is a great way to stay limber while traveling to and from your destination. Use a cart if you need to, and make sure you use proper form when lifting luggage items.

Remember, physical health is affected by more than just exercise. Your diet, sleep quality and sun exposure will also affect your wellbeing. Don’t focus on burning calories at the expense of your nutrition, your energy, or your skin.

After you return from vacation, start your personal fitness training sessions again so you can continue to meet your goals for good health. If you don’t already have a personal fitness trainer, it’s never too late to sign up and start getting healthy – no matter what your age!
