3 Exercises for Relieving Hypertension, Recommended by Fitness Together Ellicott City
Oct 27, 2014
Do you suffer from hypertension in Howard County?
Despite its name, this condition doesn’t involve hyperactivity. Nor does it cause tension headaches – although stress can be a contributing factor.
Really, hypertension is just the medical term for high blood pressure!
High blood pressure symptoms vary from person to person. But many Maryland residents have reduced their symptoms through exercise – including personal training.
3 exercises to supplement your personal fitness training
Your Howard County personal trainer will create a customized program that will help you achieve your fitness goals while possibly reducing your hypertension symptoms.
But there are other activities you can do on your own to possibly help reduce symptoms. Ask your doctor if he or she recommends any of these exercises as a way to strengthen your heart and reduce stress on your arteries.
(1) Moderate Walking
Walking provides great cardiovascular exercise that’s gentle enough for most people with hypertension. Try to walk more every day, including while you’re at work. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, for example. And even try walking to your personal fitness training session if you live close enough!
(2) Gentle Stretching
Stretching can help relieve tension – while you’re at home or on the go. Did you realize you can do stretches at your desk? Make a point of standing up and stretching at least once every hour.
(3) Deep Breathing
Relaxation exercises such as deep breathing can help reduce stress, which can contribute to hypertension. Start by doing this simple breathing exercise once a day: Sit up straight and inhale until your lungs are filled with air. Hold your breath for three seconds and then exhale fully.
If possible, take your blood pressure before and after exercising. When you see the results, you’ll be even more motivated to stay on track with your personal training and any other exercises you do on your own.
(Remember to consult your doctor before starting any exercise program, including a personal training program.)
