Good Nutrition: Buying Healthy Foods on a Tight Budget

When you are looking to provide your family, and yourself, with good nutrition, but are on a tight budget, it can feel overwhelming and a little depressing. With fast food chains promoting dollar menus and cheap junk food in the grocery store, the produce section and premade health foods can seem expensive and frivolous. Fortunately, you are not the only one to think that. Learning how to eat healthy on a budget is on many people’s minds, and here are five tips to help you.

1. Research. Find out what foods contain the most nutrition for the lowest price. Bananas, broccoli, barley, and tuna are some examples of healthy foods that are low priced, and contain good nutrition for you and your family.

2. Shop seasonal. Buying produce in season can save you money. If you are eating healthy, with good nutrition, most of your meals will be comprised from the produce section of the grocery store. If corn is in season, learn some new recipes involving corn and other seasonal vegetables. If blueberries are in season, it’s the perfect time to make a healthy blueberry treat. 3. Plan ahead. Planning ahead when you’re on a tight budget is essential. You may love healthy salmon, but if it’s not in the budget this week, be prepared for some tuna instead. Be willing to appreciate new foods and new recipes that will allow you to make healthy foods, high in nutrition, without breaking the bank.
