Where should I start if I've never exercised?

"If you have never exercised you should start with a low impact basic routine. You don't want to shock your body or push too hard too fast and become mentally defeated. Starting simple may be frustrating, but it decreases chance of injury."

"Starting an exercise program for the first time can be very intimidating. Believe it or not, a lot of people think they have to get in shape before they can go to the gym or hire a trainer. Contrary to common belief, this is the perfect time to hire a professional to help you -- not only to get started, but get started with the right program for your current physical condition and goals. Starting a new exercise program is hard enough, the last thing you want to do is get injured or discouraged. A personal trainer will be able to coach you into proper form and technique, as well as advise you on the proper program that will progressively get you to the goals you want to achieve."

"If you have never exercised in the past, one of the most important steps to take before starting an exercise program is determining your fitness goals. Start with 15 minutes a day, three days a week. It’s also important to increase your daily activity. Add steps to your day by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further away from your office or the store, and so on."
"Everyone has to start with a thorough assessment and evaluation to determine what their starting points are in terms of mobility, strength, endurance, body composition, and so on. You can't track progress without knowing your starting point in these and other areas. That initial evaluation is the key to good program design whether a beginner or an elite athlete. As Alwyn Cosgrove says, 'Without assessing, you're guessing.'"
