What are some healthy snacks for my Super Bowl party?

Jan 29, 2014

"Portion control is always an issue, as even too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing! Here are some healthy snacks: nuts, cut-up veggies and fruit, jerky of various sorts and minimal amounts of alcohol. There are tons of calories in alcohol, and it's not "health food" no matter how the wine and beer industries spin it!"

Sue Teoli
FT New Canaan

"I am bringing zucchini fries and turkey burger sliders to a party. These are both low in calories and healthy."

Gwen Beckcom
FT Mission Hills

"This is my go-to for any party: Unc's Mexican Shrimp Cocktail. It has shrimp, onion, avocado and lots of other yummy ingredients. You can serve it in little bowls as a cold soup, or with tortilla chips.  It's delicious either way, but lower in calories in the bowl. Try it out!"

"One of our favorite Super Bowl snacks is lemon drop chicken wings. They are baked, not fried. The ingredients include vodka, lemon juice, sugar, olive oil, and chicken wings!  Another favorite is mini turkey burgers With gorgonzola on a whole wheat bun.  And last but not least we love Dr. Janet's Turkey Chili!"

"Don’t super-size your Super Bowl day! Americans typically chow down on thousands of unnecessary and unhealthy foods laden with calories, salt and fat. Lighten up your day and enjoy the game with some delicious, lighter and healthier versions of your favorite football fare like mock guacamole with toasted whole wheat pita chips, black bean quesadillas and butternut squash fries.  Recipes for all those items are available in my book Cholesterol Down and through the Nutrition Together program."
