Setting the Right Fitness Goal Matters

When it comes to fitness goals, many think that setting a solid goal is the easy part, and achieving it is the challenge. While it’s important to always keep your end-game in mind, setting the right foundation is an essential piece of the puzzle and one that should never be ignored.

Make It Personal

No matter where you are on your fitness journey, it’s important to curate goals that are completely unique to you. It’s also alright to ask others what they are trying to accomplish and use their answers as inspiration.

“I always ask clients what initially made them interested in working with a trainer to ensure whatever goal we set refers back to their original plan,” said Shane Caito, Manager of Fitness Together in Providence and North Attleborough.

Be Specific

Whether your goal is a physical goal (e.g., workout two times a week) or mental (e.g., have two positive thoughts about yourself a day), it’s crucial to be specific so you can track your progress. Being able to literally (and figuratively) check a task off your list allows you to stay focused and achieve everyday milestones.

“Often clients come in with large goals and underestimate the steps it takes to get to that goal. It’s a trainer’s responsibility to break down goals and explain the steps that a client will need to work through to get to the bigger picture,” said Julie Gastall, Lead Trainer at Fitness Together in Providence.

Get Real

Ask yourself: What’s the “why” behind my goal? The answer to this question will help motivate you and make it a reality. The more authentic your goals are the better—and remember, it’s OK to start small and go from there.

“When I work with clients, we go step by step and think about what is a reasonable aim for them. We also identify a goal that is a reach, but obtainable,” said Jess Zemeitus, Lead Trainer at Fitness Together in North Attleborough.
