4 Tips to Find Your Perfect Personal Trainer

Feb 16, 2021

Whether you’re looking to achieve a specific fitness goal, recovering from an injury, or exploring ways to be more active, partnering with a personal trainer is a great way to reach milestones and challenge yourself. But not every trainer is right for you. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re looking for so you can set yourself up for success from the get-go.

Here are 4 tips to find a personal trainer that’s right for you:

1) Gear Up for a Goal

Before you begin the search for a trainer, it’s crucial to think about why you want to go down this path. It may be hard to pinpoint a reason or even put it into words—and that’s OK. Trainers are pros at asking the right questions to ensure they are tuned into a client’s needs. Their job is to listen, collaborate, and create actionable goals with you that you both feel are achievable. This is the beginning of a powerful partnership that’s based on trust and sets the stage for what’s to come.

2) Put Your Preferences into Perspective

Is hiking your favorite way to hustle? Do you prefer power walks? Is chasing after your kids (or grandkids) what gets your heart pumping? No matter what you’re into, it’s essential to know what activities you enjoy so you can continue to do the things you love. There’s also nothing wrong with not knowing or admitting you haven’t found “your” workout yet. Embracing a more active lifestyle is a journey, not a destination. A personal trainer will partner with you to design a routine that’s right for you and, most importantly, works for you.

3) Be Mindful of Your Motivators

Every trainer has a unique style and approach to working with clients. Personalities definitely come into play when you’re challenging yourself to step outside of your comfort zone. Think about who you want to work with and what type of motivator is not the best fit for you. Are you looking for a cheerleader? Do you want a muscle man or woman? How about a cardio king or queen? Do you just want a workout bud? There’s no right or wrong answer—it comes down to who you think will empower and encourage you to reach your goals. So make sure to team up with someone who makes you feel confident, always keeps you safe, and helps you continuously improve.

4) Ask the Right Questions

You wouldn’t go to a hairstylist or a massage therapist who isn’t certified—the same holds true for a personal trainer. Before booking a trainer, ask about their credentials and ensure they have a personal training certification as well as real-world fitness experience. Learn how they approach designing a workout that’s unique to your needs and ask them how they’ll help you meet your goals, conquer challenges, and overcome burnout. Lastly, find out how you’ll be assessed and what methods will be used to track your progress. A trainer should be fully invested in your success and willing to share their strategies to keep you moving in the right direction.
