Fall Activities

Oct 1, 2024

Enjoying the crisp cool weather that October brings is a must for any New Englander. Here are some great activities to participate in to get you outdoors and keep you active at the same time. Let’s skip the crowded fairs with all their tempting fried foods and do something that aligns with your health and wellness goals. Here’s a list of some fun activities that are also family friendly and open to all levels and abilities:

  1. Hiking - top of my list for sure, there is nothing more calming to my nervous system then a peaceful stroll through the woods taking in all the beautiful foliage and hearing the leaves crunch under my feet. By this time of year the bug population is down, making being in the woods more enjoyable. This is great for everyone as the level of difficulty is up to you. If you’re looking for some places, here are a few of my favorites in this state: Hidden Valley Nature Preserve, Washington Depot (many trails, various levels, along a river, beautiful foliage, pet and kid friendly), Talcott Mountain, Avon (local, gravel wide trail, moderate difficulty, bathrooms at top), Sessions Woods, Burlington (easy to moderate, trails well marked, gravel, pet and kid friendly). For a more extensive list of trails nearby check out ALLTRAILS (available on both Android and Iphone)
  1. Kayak/Canoeing/Paddle boarding - just because the water is cold doesn't mean you can't still enjoy some water activities. If you're looking for some solitude take to a lake or the Farmington River. The foliage along the water is breathtaking and you will enjoy the peacefulness of being one of the few people out on the water this time of year.
  1. Ziplining - if you're looking for something more adventurous this may be up your alley. Take in the foliage from a different perspective by soaring right through them! Storrs has a zipline adventure course which would be great for some of the bigger kiddos and those seeking to test their athletic abilities.
  1. Biking - CT has some pretty awesome and well maintained trails to bike on that are paved and keep you away from having to ride on the road. The local Farmington Canal River Trail is a beautiful ride and gives you a total 13 miles to log.

These activities don’t have to be exclusive to Fall, but everything's better when enjoyed in the crisp air and warm sun. Get out this season and enjoy all the special places our home has to offer.
