Mom was Right: A Healthy breakfast Edition

So guess what? Your mother was right, again! (Mom’s are always right). You should have been eating your breakfast every morning before you start your day. But let me guess! I can hear you saying it to yourself now. I’m not hungry when I wake up, I don’t have the time, I feel sick when I eat something in the morning. Whine, whine, whine, blah, blah, blah, excuses, excuses, excuses.

So let’s say you had dinner at around 8PM, got home from work, sat down in front of the TV and pigged out. So if you ate around 8PM and had lunch the next day around noonish, that’s 15-17 hours that your body has been starving itself!!! What would your dog or cat do if you didn’t feed them for that long? I can tell you with my dog I would have to hide my shoes so he wouldn’t tear into them.

#1 Starvation!
What happens when you don’t eat your Wheaties? You have reduced cognitive ability (I wonder how this affects my kids you are thinking to yourself). I’m so glad you asked! Well America only comes in 17th in best countries in education. We got beat by Canada… Canada! I love our cousin’s to the north but the only things they should be beating us in is Hockey and Maple syrup production, not education. When your body is starved you really think your brain will be at full capacity? So when you and your family is rushing out the door to work or school don’t just grab a pop tart on the way out and eat something nutritious.
One of my favorites is Scrambled Eggs with Veggies. Throw in a container, add 1 handful of veggies and a pinch of cheese. Microwave the mixture for 30 seconds, stir, and cook another 30 seconds, or until eggs are done. This should take you no more than 3 minutes, and if you don’t have 3 minutes in the morning you either need a new job or reevaluate your morning routine.

#2 Energy!
Food is basically fuel for our bodies we can all grasp that concept. So when you have been starving yourself by not eating for 15 hours where do you think your energy levels are going to be? Down in the dumps for sure. Also when people have been starving themselves, their energy is really low and they tend to pig out at lunch time. This is where it really screws with your blood sugar levels and your body is pumping insulin which makes its seems like you aren’t hungry. Try this, eat something every 3-4 hours throughout the day for 2-3 days even if your aren’t hungry (this is going to reset your blood sugar) and I can promise you that when you wake up you will feel like you are starving.
When you do eat breakfast make sure it is a well-rounded meal including carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. High glycemic foods, or foods that have a significant impact on your blood sugar will make you almost get that sugar high then that crash afterwards. So a good example to stay away from would be cornflakes. Harvard Medical School made a great list of High glycemic foods, check it out.

#3 Weight gain
This has to be the main reason that you should be eating breakfast above all others. You would think skipping a meal would promote weight loss but it’s actually the opposite. Reason being is that when you skip a meal you tend to over eater on the next couple of meals. So when you are rushing out the door choose fiber-rich foods ex. oatmeal or fruits, in addition to the protein, and fat to make it a well-balanced breakfast.

This may sounds like the simple steps that everyone knows but how many people actually get this right?... Master the basics before you try anything else
