4 Tips for an Exercise Plan During Move More Month

April Fool’s Day, Easter, and Earth Day have their fans, but the real question is: how are you going to recognize Move More Month this April?

You say you’ve never heard of it before? Well, sit back and… actually, scratch that. Stand up, jog in place, and bend an ear.

A spinoff of National Walking Day, held the first Wednesday of every April, the American Heart Association expanded its campaign to an entire month to get Americans off their couches and office chairs and into a routine exercise program that would enrich their health.

Observations held throughout April shine a spotlight on the critical nature of regular physical activity, while encouraging those who have fallen off the workout wagon – as well as individuals who have never initiated an exercise program – to take control of their health once again.

Here are just four tips to help you put an exercise plan in motion during Move More Month:

  • Plan ahead. Consistency is key. Certainly, in today’s world, obstacles to a routine workout are ever-present. A certified personal trainer and enrollment at a private fitness studio can help you cut through the clutter of a busy calendar and make a concerted effort to stay on top of scheduled workout sessions.
  • Dress for success. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes while participating in Move More Month activities and workout sessions. Choose something that fits comfortably, but that is neither too snug nor loose and opt for wicking fabrics that draw sweat away from your body, allowing your skin to breathe.
  • Be reasonable. Move More Month is a gentle push to get out into the world and move around a bit more than maybe you’re accustomed to. We’re not out to set World Records or reinvent the workout in just a month. Set modest goals and work patiently toward them. The biggest objective is to keep up with your new exercise regimen once the calendar flips to May 1.
  • Celebrate every success, no matter how small. Move More Month is about positivity and encouragement. Small steps make a big difference. The important thing is that you’re in motion. No matter what, don’t be hard on yourself. Every attempt deserves a pat on the back, and every milestone – regardless of magnitude – deserves a fist-pump for a job well done.
