Client of the Month - Anne Smithson

Anne has been a client of Fitness Together since August and has overcome some of life’s most challenging obstacles. She fought with cancer and suffered weight gain as a result. Feeling discouraged from trying and failing with other fitness facilities, she met with Sean to give fitness one last shot to get her in the shape she used to be in. Two months later, 7 lbs down, 2% body fat down, and an overall 300% increase in upper body muscular endurance, Anne has come to the realization that she CAN do this! “I started working out at Fitness Together in August and absolutely love it! I was a big athlete growing up, very fit and thin and never imagined I would ever get of shape or struggle with my weight. That all changed about 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The treatments led to weight gain, and I found myself really out of shape….and I knew that both excess body fat and lack of exercise would increase my risk of a recurrence of my cancer.

I had no idea how tough it was to get in shape and lose weight in my 50’s! I bought a treadmill and a bike and a dog. I tried at home DVDs, walking with friends, big name fancy gyms, smaller gyms, group fitness classes. I found myself just going through the motions with very little success. After 3 friends were diagnosed with breast cancer recurrences over the summer, I had a true wakeup call and knew I needed to get serious.

I went for a consultation with Sean at Fitness Together and had every intention of telling him I was not interested. It’s not at all convenient for me - it’s about a 30 minute drive, and my schedule is crazy and unpredictable! But I was so impressed at the time he took to understand my goals and challenges and the personalization of the program he and Steve developed for me. The atmosphere at FT is FUN! I love the positivity and motivating atmosphere, the active coaching and encouragement. They make me believe I CAN do this! I love that the workouts are repeated weekly within the program so I can see that I am improving in measurable ways. I’ve only had 2 assessments so far and was excited that I improved in each category.

One thing that has been huge for me is that I am finally making my workouts a priority. I’m treating them like I would a doctor’s appointment or haircut, putting them on my calendar first and working my social life around them! I’ve got a long way to go, but for the first time in a long time, I am truly looking forward to working out!

I’ve had to accept that my progress might not be as fast as I might have hoped… but the small steps I am taking and the habits I am forming are sustainable. I know that is going to serve me well in the long run, and that the results I am achieving will be permanent! I’m happy to say that I’ve gotten to the point where I believe daily exercise is nonnegotiable!”
