While you don’t have to do everything, even just small swaps in your daily routine can add up to make a difference for your health and for the planet.

Visit the farmer’s market, and buy local food.
When you buy fruits and veggies that were grown within about 100 miles from where you live at a farmer’s market, they typically make it to you after they have had a chance to ripen naturally rather than being picked before they are ready and artificially ripened with chemicals. Locally grown produce that it is in season has also been found to have more nutrients than produce that is out of season.
While all of that is reason enough for your health, local produce also doesn’t have to travel as far to reach you, which means less pollution makes it into the air from truck emissions. Not only that but sometimes small-scale growers use safer farming practices and often employ some organic growing techniques, even if they haven’t gone through the process of paying to be organically certified. Make it a practice to visit your local farmer’s market to pick up your produce for the week and everybody wins.

Take short showers, and even consider switching to mostly cold showers.
While it can be relaxing to get in a long, hot shower, there are other ways to wind-down that are better for the environment. When you shorten your shower by just three minutes a day, you are actually saving around 10 gallons of water — less water equals a lower water bill for you too.
And here’s the big challenge: Because it takes so much energy for the water heater to get cold water hot enough for your shower, if you turn even part of your shower into a cold water shower, you’ll help the planet. It’s been shown that cold showers support your immunity, help with muscle recovery, improve circulation and could even promote fat loss. It may take some time to build up to a cold shower, so try lowering the temperature little by little.
Store your leftovers in glass containers, and repurpose the food in other meals.
We all know by now that we need to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics. That means bringing your own water bottle, as well as having your own reusable tote bags for grocery shopping when you’re out and about. You can also reduce your use of plastics in the home in the way you store food. Consider buying glass containers to store leftovers, or even the reusable silicone Stasher bags, which last longer and can be used over and over again.
And when it comes to leftovers, if you don’t eat them on the first day, try adding them into a soup, stew or sauté the next day, so as little food as possible gets wasted. Food waste is always an issue for the environment, and we should all do our part to help.
