Exercise is NOT Punishment!
Contrary to what you may believe!
Why do you exercise? Is it because you eat too much junk food? Do you force yourself on the treadmill because you hate the way your jeans fit? Do you do those lunges and push ups that you dread because you are trying to get back to your high school weight?
If you associate exercise with weight loss and it’s the “necessary evil” to seeing the scale go down, it will never become a lifestyle. After all, who wants to punish themselves 4 to 6 times per week for the rest of their life? That would be like me deciding to read my old math textbook for at least 30 minutes, five days a week for the foreseeable future. Reading my old math textbook sounds awful! There’s no way I would be able to stick to that commitment!
The same goes for exercise. If you view it as punishment for the way you look or for the number on the scale you’ll never turn it into a lifestyle. You have to change the way you view exercise and stop associating it with weight loss.
Is a person in a healthy weight range exempt from exercise? Of course not! They still need to get off the couch and move to keep their muscles, bones, joints, heart and lungs strong!
There are a million right ways to get active and of course it’s not going to be a party every single day. But you need to find different things you enjoy doing for exercise and you need to do them not for weight loss, but for all the other health benefits associated with exercise.
Exercise because you like to have energy, you like to sleep good at night, you like to relieve stress and sweat out toxins… Don’t exercise solely for weight loss.
It’s a very small but very major shift in your mindset. But if you can make that mindset switch, you’ll be more likely to stay committed to that gym membership. It won’t be easy all the time, but if after every workout you reflect on all the good things you just did for your body and your health that has nothing to do with weight, you’ll be smiling and thriving with every push-up or kettlebell swing!
At Fitness Together we say “exercise because you love your body… not because you hate it.”
