For millions throughout the U.S., Thanksgiving Day kicks off with a Turkey Trot. Before the turkey, stuffing, pie and football millions hit the streets in their communities to run in a 5k or 10k race. If you’ve decided to take the leap and join a Turkey Trot this year, here are a few tips to help you conquer your new Thanksgiving tradition.
The Right Shoes Make a Big Difference
If you’re new to running, you have to make sure that you have the right shoes. Go to a running store to get shoes fitted to your foot. Comfortable fitting shoes will make a huge difference, both in performance and removing discomfort.
Start out Slow
If this is your first Turkey Trot and you’re not an avid runner, you must walk before you can run. Try walking at a brisk pace three to four times a week for 35-45 minutes at a time.
Move to Intervals
After you can comfortably walk for 35-45 minutes at a good pace, you’ll want to change your training to intervals. Start by jogging for a minute followed by 5 minutes of walking throughout your workout. As you feel more comfortable, increase the jogging interval and decrease the amount of time spent walking. If you’re running a 5k race, you’ll want to be comfortable jogging for 30 minutes straight. If your race is a 10k, you should be comfortable running for 60 minutes straight. Remember to do dynamic stretching before any workout to prevent injury.
Hydration is Key
It’s important the day of the race to stay hydrated. Before the race, make sure that you drink enough water to keep you hydrated throughout. If there is a water station on the course, take advantage of a glass. Remember, if you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already getting dehydrated.
