New Year’s Resolution Rescue

New Year’s Resolution Rescue

It’s already half way through February and you’re trying to decide if you’re really ready for that fresh start. This year will be the year you tell yourself. The year you finally get healthy. The year you finally lose the excess weight. Are you feeling like you’ve lost your “new year, new you” excitement and motivation? If so, you’re not alone.

Losing weight and hitting fitness goals are among the 10 most common New Year’s resolutions made by Americans. Out of the 47% of Americans that make New Year’s resolutions, only 8% of these resolutions are successful.

We all know how great being active is for us, so why is it that only 20% of Americans meet the recommended levels of daily fitness? Well, because it’s hard. It’s really hard. In order to be healthier, we must change our routines, lifestyles and habits. It takes time and it takes discipline. It’s perfectly normal to experience ups and downs during your fitness journey. So, what are some ways you might be able to bounce back from your New Year’s resolution rut?

  • If you haven’t already, you need to set a reasonable goal for yourself. Set your sights on running a race, learning how to powerlift or preparing yourself for a swimming competition. Consider your fitness level and be realistic when setting your goals. Don’t set yourself up for failure. Also, make sure the timing is a few months out. You’ll have enough time to prepare, but won’t have enough time to slack off

  • Hire a trainer and increase your accountability.  Here at Fitness Together, we’ll keep you on track and hold you accountable. Let your trainer know what your goals are, and we’ll make sure you stay on track and keep your head in the game

  • Find a physical activity you enjoy. You’re much more likely to stick with exercising If you’re doing an activity you enjoy. You don’t have to go running and lift weights every day. Change it up and try spinning or yoga. Keep fitness interesting and do things that might intimidate you. Allowing yourself to venture outside of your comfort zone will inspire and motivate you!

  • Commit to a schedule. Decide on an exercise schedule that meets your needs and fits in with your lifestyle. Don’t be too aggressive and over-commit yourself. If you can truly only make it to the gym a couple times a week, it’s ok to start there. Make sure to communicate your schedule to your trainer so that they can keep you from skipping a workout!

It’s important to remember that YOU ARE NOT ALONE in your struggles. Everyone experiences the fitness ups and downs. If it was easy, we’d all be fitness models by now! What’s important is that you learn to love exercise, and before you know it, it will become a regular part of your life. Once it becomes your lifestyle, you won’t need to make a New Year’s resolution for better health, you’ll be on track year-round!
