The Top 7 reasons both women and men should lift heavy

For as long as I can remember I loved fitness and being active. I played volleyball and soccer in high school and college and surfed all year round, any chance I got. I also competed in tons of races and obstacle course races and endurance events. After over 25 years of doing this I decided something was missing. Sure, I could run long races and swim and bike for hours but I lacked strength, I wanted to do pull-ups, box jumps and improve my core balance. I needed to build strength and stability to improve performance in all my sports and hobbies but I was clueless as to where to start. That was when I hired a fitness trainer to teach me proper exercise form and challenge me to lift heavy and now there’s no looking back. I’ve learned so much from this individual , who continues to challenge, inspire and teach me something new (over fifteen years later) to this day. Lifting heavy weights has not made me look “bulky” or “manly”. Instead, it has given me lean curves, a sense of empowerment, mental focus and is always challenging. Here are my top seven reasons why both women and men should lift heavy that have changed my life, made me a stronger person AND inspired me to become a fitness trainer I guarantee it will change yours too!

1 Attitude boost- Lifting something that you once thought was impossible can be very liberating and empowering. It will have you saying “Bring it” to any challenge that comes your way

2. Strength- You’ll get stronger, plain and simple. Everyday things like carrying the kids, hoisting groceries, or say moving the couch will become a breeze.

3. Lean Curves- Think rounded shoulders, instead of slouchy, sloping ones. A firm and lifted derrière instead of a droopy one. Cardio nor barbie weights alone gave me that.

4. Bone Density- As we age we lose bone mass. Performing heavy weight bearing exercises helps prevent bone loss and conditions like osteoporosis. Starting a heavy lifting program before the age of forty gives you a leg up.

5. Fat Loss- adding muscle, metabolically active tissue to your body will increase your resting heart rate. That means even when you’re sitting or sleeping, you’ll burn additional calories

6. Injury Prevention- stronger muscles and tendons promote protection and stability in the joints, which can help you avoid injury not only exercising, but during everyday activities as well

7 . Improved focus- As your strength and the amount of weight you lift increase, intense focus is required to avoid injury. This focus in the gym—if you let it—will carry over into your non-gym activities.
