Being overweight has been a struggle my entire life. Sticking to any sort of eating / fitness routine was impossible. I would try things for a week or two - and then give up. During the summer of 2015, I began to realize how lazy I had become. Here I was at just 35 years old - and I had ZERO energy or motivation to do anything but lay on the couch and watch TV and eat. I would watch an hour long show and realize at the end that I had consumed an entire bag of potato chips. I knew I was gaining, but being an emotional eater, I would eat to make myself feel better about it!!! It was a vicious circle and I became very depressed. I felt so terrible about myself.

Suddenly I hopped on the scale and topped out at the heaviest I have ever been in my life, 210 lbs. My eyes almost popped out of my head. I knew I had to change.

 

I did so much research online - everything that I looked into was either way too expensive or looked way too intimidating. I signed up for a different program, and after class I would be doubled over throwing up because I was so out of shape. I felt awful. And before I knew it, I was back on the couch doing nothing and feeling terrible about myself, AND NOW intimidated about going back to the gym!

 

After getting engaged in December 2015, I decided I really HAD to do something. I didn't want to hate my wedding pictures and look back and wish I could have changed anything. Back online I went, and I discovered Fitness Together. I went in and talked with the owner, Michael Hall, first. I thought for sure I was going to get another one of those "gym speeches" and pressured into signing up. So I was definitely on guard. But Michael made me feel so at ease, and NEVER once pressured me into coming in. He encouraged me, motivated me, and gave me as many options as he possibly could, but left the decision up to me. Told me to go home and think about it. Said he would follow up in a day. No pressure.

 

The other thing I loved was the studio set-up. It's really, truly a ONE ON ONE training session! You work out in your own little room with just your trainer. That immediately relieved my fear of looking like an idiot when working out, or that feeling that everyone is staring at you.  So I decided to go ahead and give it a try. What was the harm?

 

I signed up for the early shift. If I didn't get it over with first thing, I knew I would never stick to it. So that first morning my alarm went off, my immediate thought was "what have I signed up for?!?!" But I got up, and went.  Complained the entire time and then some. I was NOT a happy camper. I could barely hold a plank and would be out of breath from lifting 8lb dumbbells. I'll be honest - I wanted to quit. I would be so sore I could barely walk. Knowing that I had someone waiting for me at the gym kept me going - if they were going to get up that early, I could do it too. Little by little, I started feeling stronger. I noticed my clothes were fitting different. I found myself waking up a little faster. I had so much energy. I would actually smile when I walked into the studio. This working out stuff wasn't so bad and it was making a HUGE impact on my life in so many ways.

 

I developed such great relationships with ALL of the trainers, but really grew to love Shannon and Jen. It's like working out with a friend. They know how to motivate me. They know when I complain "I can't do it" that I really CAN do it and they push me and help me reach my goals. When I'm sprinting in the parking lot about to die, Shannon is right there running next to me.

 

Not only have there been AMAZING physical changes (I have gone from a size

16 to a size 8!), but my strength is the best it's ever been. Now I can hold a real plank for over a minute and bench over 80lbs. I can do sit ups without using much more than my ab muscles. (AB MUSCLES! I HAVE THEM!) I FEEL like a completely different person. When I look in the mirror, I don't see that sad, overweight person anymore...and I don't miss her one bit. :)

When did you start your fitness journey and what motivated you to start?

I started in June 2019.  

How would you say FT is different than others you’ve tried?

This place is all about the trainers and their commitment to you.  This isn’t a gym where you show up (or not) and you don’t know what you’re doing once you get there.  They walk you through every exercise with patience, individualized attention and zero judgment.  

What advice would you give to new clients?

Incremental change is the key to success.  There are four pillars to getting all this right (strength training, cardio, nutrition and proper sleep habits) and you can’t change everything all at once.  Make small changes and once those are working and have become habits, then change something else that isn’t working. Then repeat!

What Motivated you to start? 

I took a vacation in May of last year and one of the pictures I took with my family was unflattering enough that I knew I needed a change.

What have been your greatest achievements?

I’ve decreased my body fat by about 8% and have lost around 20 lbs (and dropped 2 inches off my waistline) in the last 6 months.  On the muscle building side, all my measurable across the board are better…but the biggest difference might be in something simple like pushups.  When I started I could only muster 3…now I can do about 20!

What were/are your biggest struggles?

I work full time in downtown Cleveland and have two little girls under the age of 10.  Finding the time to work out while not short-changing my career and family responsibilities is a constant struggle.  But I’ve found a routine that works for me and balances everything in my life in a way that works.  If I can find time for this, anyone can!

What were some of your goals when you started and what are your goals now?

My goals were very simplistic at the time: lose 10lbs and add some muscle if I could. My goals are even more simple now: continue to decrease my body fat % and increase my lean muscle mass.  I don’t have an “end goal” in mind because this is a lifestyle change, not a specific diet or a fad for a short duration.  The goal is continuous improvement and there is no end to that!

What is your favorite thing about your workouts?

They are different every day and I have no idea what to expect.  I just know that when I walk through that door there is someone waiting for me who is as committed to my good health as I am!

I had been an overweight person my whole life.  Over the last several years I had really packed on the pounds traveling for work and living a very sedentary lifestyle.  I do enjoy eating very much.  It was one of my favorite things to do.  But as I got older, I am 41 years old; my lifestyle began to catch up with me.  I was being prescribed more and more medication for various weight/lifestyle related health issues.  My health was deteriorating, and I knew it.  I also started to feel overweight for the first time in my life.  I just looked unhealthy.  It was rather a low point in my life.  I knew that I needed to change something, my lifestyle, but I had not been, up to this point, willing to make the sacrifices necessary to establish and attain weight loss goals.  I had tried diets and exercise in the past but had always fallen short within a few weeks and had given up.  If I were going to make this change I knew that I would need help. 

In March 2012 I contacted Fitness Together (FT) and spoke to Mike Hall.  I was a little hesitant to hire a professional trainer, because of cost, but Mike and I spoke for some time and he convinced me to come in for a 360 fitness assessment.  To say the least…..it was awful.  It was embarrassing, to me, to see how out-of-shape that I had become.  But that is where I resolved to make the change.  The professional trainers at FT came together as one team with one goal.  To help me lose weight, get in better shape and to keep me motivated.  When I got there in March 2012 I weighed 258.2 pounds and had a BMI reading of 36.5.  I was clinically in class 2 obesity.  It was sobering.  In August 2012, just 5 short months later, I weighed 193.6 pounds and had a BMI reading of 25.1.*  These dramatic results were due to the fitness education and workout instruction provided from the team at Fitness Together.  My whole life and body has changed.  The FT team not only encouraged me to work hard at the gym, they encouraged me to do things outside of the gym.  I have taken up running on my off days from FT.  I plan to begin running 5K races very soon. It is very exciting. 

Also, in August 2012, my life and my family’s life changed dramatically, instantly.  After I had lost over 60 lbs and had gotten into the best shape, arguably, of my entire life, I had a heart attack.*  My doctor called it a “major event.” What an understatement!  It was a shock to me, my friends and my family.  But the one thing that stood out during the whole ordeal is how well my heart stood up to the attacks.  My doctor credited the great cardio shape and weight loss that I had undertaken over the past few months.  The effort had increased my ability to withstand the attach and, because of the cardio shape and weight loss that I had achieved at FT, increased the probability of survival much, much higher.*  My wife and I are personally indebted to the whole FT family in Hudson for helping me to get ready for a disease that I had no idea that I had.  My doctors expect a full and speedy recovery.  I have already, in early October 2012, begun running again and am continuing with strength training at the FT facility in Hudson. 

My experience has gone much further than simply training sessions and advice.  It has truly become life changing.  The team at FT is more than just fitness professionals and training consultants, they have become my friends.  They are people that I will never forget and will always think of every time I kiss my wife or hug my daughter.  If you want to become part of an experience that will truly change your life, do what I did and give Mike a call, let him explain how the program works and then come in for a fitness assessment.  Your investment of time and money will pay you dividends that can only be described as amazing.  I have had trouble putting my experience into words.  Words almost seem futile as they will never say what I feel in my HEART for the FT team.  Mike, Jen, Tonya, Josh, Cody and Brad have all worked hard, as one team, to make sure that I stayed the course.  That course helped me to overcome the greatest challenge I had ever faced.  Thanks FT. By the way……today, when I’m writing this, I weigh 187.5 lbs and have a BMI of 23.8.* 

Man Survives Heart Attack After Months of Weight Loss at Fitness Together

My name is Joy. I was born with myelomeningocele and severe curvature of my spine. I have had 35 brain and spinal surgeries which eventually led to me being in a wheelchair.
I fought to recover and walk again with leg braces and a walker to no avail. I continued physical therapy for many years, and obviously it helped post-op, but unfortunately the physical therapists looked more at my disability rather than my potential—basically, they put me in a box and focused on my limitations which prevented me from moving forward. I became discouraged thinking this was my lot in life.
My Mom, Dad and younger sister encouraged me to look outside the box of healthcare facilities. My sister was in college for a degree in science physiology and kinesiology. She motivated me to look into fitness training. Hence, my search began and I was fortunate to find Fitness Together.
When I met Michael he looked beyond my wheelchair and disability, and saw me as an individual with potential. He connected with my dream and desire to lose weight and build strength. Eventually the reality of walking again became a new goal. This enthusiasm to help me was transmitted to the awesome trainers.
Now, not even a year later, I feel amazing! I was cast for leg braces again after 15 years of not walking. I have dropped weight, pant sizes, and my upper body is getting more toned. Additionally my balance has radically improved through strength training. I know for a fact that I would not be where I am if it wasn’t for the incredible team at FT. They are always pushing and encouraging me to do more, and holding me accountable.
If you are looking to improve your health, get toned, or whatever your goals are, the people at FT really care and will help you to get where you want to be. The people at Fitness Together have become more than just trainers to me. They have become great friends!

I was very reluctant to come dressed in workout clothes to face personal trainers. I was very happy to find that I felt comfortable and even if I couldn't do the exercise at all they would continue to modify it to meet my current level. They would listen to me and not criticize but encourage me multiple ways to get over my next hurdle. Two years ago when I started I was overweight, had no energy and was limited physically on what I could participate in. Today I feel so much better about the way I look and even more important I feel great.* I am able to keep up with my 4 and 7 year old grandchildren and can participate in sports that I never thought would be possible. I swim laps and bike and can even run. They have also helped me tremendously in the area of my nutrition. It has been a one step at a time process but I now feel like I am making the choices and not that food is controlling me. I have learned that you can eat nutritiously and not give up taste. I am so happy that I decided to not accept my condition as just getting old (I am 54 years old) and to do something to change my situation by coming to Fitness Together.

I hate to workout! :( I've signed up at different facilities and tried to work out on my own. All failures. I finally decided to try the one-on-one thing. I've been here July 2010 and haven't missed an appointment. The trainers are patient and willing to work with me. I appreciate their knowledge and experience. I've worked with all the trainers and like the subtle differences. While it would be so easy to quit, I don't. Their encouragement to get through another session makes it worth it. Thank you!!

Warrior Dash Finisher!

I cannot say enough about Josh and Cody! In the spring Josh suggested that I participate in the Warrior Dash. If it involved heights, water or running then this was not for me. I have a fear of heights and water and in high school I tried out for track and was told by the coach that I should try shot-put. But Josh did not give up on me. He truly believed that this was something that I could do. He told me that what we did in training has prepared me more then enough. But the running part was an issue. Cody and Josh worked with me but I needed to do more to be ready to run. Cody told me that I could just walk the 5k. My goal became to finish the course and to complete each and every obstacle. And I DID!!!! (Just ask anyone that sees me when I come to my sessions and afterwards). Out of 6,756 runners that day I came in at 6,729 in regards to time, at least I was not last.* Josh has me already signed up for next year's Warrior Dash and Cody has already asked me what my goal for the next Dash was. Not sure about the running, but losing more weight and perhaps jogging at a nice pace. I truly have a great time working out with Josh and Cody. They push you more then you think you can do. They are always positive and know what your limitations are. I also enjoy the company of working out with other clients (MaryAnn and Vicki)! I feel more confident about my appearance. Lost 100 LBS at Fitness Together!*

Jaime has been a Fitness Together client for more than a year and, as you can see, she looks great!  What follows are Jaime's own words.

How much weight have you lost to date?

I started out at 328 pounds. The last time I weighed myself, I was 189 pounds. So, in less than a year (April to February) I've lost at least 139 pounds.*

What motivated you to improve your level of fitness?

I decided to make a change when I finally realized that I woke up every day miserable - without anything to look forward to. I realized that I kept waiting for my fabulous life to begin. At that minute, I concluded that I should stop waiting and start living. I had to do something.

To be honest, I didn't know what to do to get started. I followed a "points system" diet plan and was relatively successful, but then I hit a plateau. So I bought some 5-pound weights and ordered an exercise video from an infomercial, but I was frustrated because I lacked the knowledge and support to be successful. Then I found out about Fitness Together. The rest is history!

How did you hear about Fitness Together?

A friend told me about Fitness Together. I was feeling frustrated with my feeble attempts to work out on my own and she mentioned that she had just started working out with personal trainers at a local studio.  The more she told me about it, the more interested I became.  She encouraged me to schedule a free fitness assessment.  

My trainers are almost like family now. Whether I'm laughing, crying, frustrated, happy, nervous, or excited, they are willing to share my stories and emotions. When I need to be motivated, they push me. When I need some hope, they inspire me. When I need confidence, they support me. On days when I feel too overwhelmed or exhausted to go work out, I still show up to my sessions.

At Fitness Together, I've learned to push myself in ways I never expected and to accomplish things I never thought possible. It's empowering to have someone know what you are capable of even when you don't yet realize your full potential for yourself. One of my trainers always says "whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right."  It turns out that he's right.

Are you able to participate in activities you previously were not? Do you have any newfound interests?

Yes!  One year after starting my new lifestyle, I rollerblade and ice skate frequently. And now that I feel OK wearing a bathing suit, I plan to spend my summer in the water. I love to swim!

I've also learned to enjoy cooking, thanks to working with Fitness Together's dietitian. She taught me that cooking, like working out, is all about learning the basics and then experimenting to find out what works for me.

What have been your greatest achievements?

My greatest achievements have been to participate in several different health events.  I have participated in the Warrior Dash and Arnold Classic Pump and 5k Run. I would’ve never been able to do these if it weren’t for the expertise and support from the trainers at Fitness Together.

When did you start your journey and what motivated you to start?

I started my fitness journey with Fitness Together about 10 years ago. I was motivated to join Fitness Together after talking with a friend who was training at Fitness Together. She was telling me how wonderful the trainers were and how good she was feeling.

What were some of your goals when you started?!

The goals when I started were to lose a little weight and to feel better.

What are your goals now?

My goals now are to get stronger and increase my cardio.

What were/are your biggest struggles?

My biggest struggle is nutrition. I’m currently meeting with Amanda to help in this area.

What is your favorite thing about your workouts?

My favorite thing about the workouts are that they are customized to each person and their ability.

What advice would you give to new clients?

Just walk through that Fitness Together door and trust the trainers!

How would you say FT is different than others you’ve tried?

The trainers at Fitness Together sets it apart from other fitness programs. The expertise and support from the Fitness Together trainers have helped me achieve fitness goals that I never thought I could accomplish.

What I like about Fitness Together is that they help me manage my schedule, which is complicated and changes regularly. No matter what changes, they work with me (no guilt!) to keep fitness a regular part of my life and I really appreciate that.

I started in May 2018 and I joined FT in August.  I wanted to feel better and lose weight.

What were some of your goals when you started?

I participate in competitive dog sports with my dog and wanted to get more fit to keep up with her.

What are your goals now?

Maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of water along with my weight goal.

What were/are your biggest struggles?

Fitting in time to work out and maintaining diet.

How would you say FT is different than others you’ve tried?

The support from all the trainers is wonderful! It is awesome that they reach out to check in and are so motivating. This has not happened with programs I have tried before. 

What is your favorite thing about your workouts?

It’s an opportunity to relieve stress from the week.

What advice would you give to new clients?

It sounds cliché but fitness is journey and not every day is going to be perfect.  Each day is an opportunity to get back on track.  Give it time.

I like the concept of one-on-one training. It is definitely individualized and can be customized to the client and changed to meet the client's needs, even on the spot. I have been very pleased with Fitness Together. Workouts have been with mixed up with different coaches so I have had the chance to work with all of them. Each has their own style and favorite sets to work me through so it never gets boring. I have to say they work us hard. I have come a long way since I started. I just got back from a trip to Alaska halibot fishing out of Kayaks. Without the Fitness Together preparation I am not sure I would have been able to be paddling in the ocean 10-12 hours for 5 days in a row, the wind, waves and tidal currents would have won.*

I have been working out for 2 years here at FT fitness and my results have been great when i stick with the program - i have Gone from 325 down to 290*, then fell off the wagon came back went from 325 again to 282*, this place really keeps you going. I am very conscious of the need to stay fit and agile and I find the program at Fitness Together is a very good method to accomplish that. The Trainers keep track of the routines which I perform each visit and work to continue my progress. They plan each session taking into account what I did previously. There are periodic assessments and then planning future sessions based on the assessments. I feel that they are taking my training very seriously. I appreciate that and I find that I am doing very well in comparison with my peers.*

I began working out with FT about two months ago, mostly because even though I had worked out before, I found each time I began in earnest, I ended up hurting myself.  I was a professional athlete for most of my adult life, but as I age, I find my relationship to my body has changed and I'm simply unfamiliar with what it needs now.  As I passed 60, the things that used to be good for me, or I thought they were, no longer work to keep me fit or strong or balanced.  My relationship to food and my ability to adjust my weight is also different and honestly confusing, as I thought I understood this sort of basic task.  Worse, I often realized that by the end of the day, my energy was completely gone.  I finally thought I simply had to go back to school around this and I'm so very glad I did.

In the two months I've been working with the trainers at FT, I've rediscovered my enjoyment of working with my own body and learned how to tend to what it needs now, not what I remember it needing.  I've learned how to carry myself again and work out with safety and enjoyment.  There isn't a single trainer I've met who isn't knowledgeable and attentive, and I would recommend FT to any friend or family member as a gift one gives to oneself.  The one on one attention is simply the best part of the whole package, save the enormous jump in energy I have left at the end of the day.  My weight is decreasing steadily and my strength and balance improve every time I work out.*

Although I've only minimal experience with formal fitness training, FT is head and shoulders above the kind of orientation  to the machine circuit I've had before.  I like the idea of using my own body weight as resistance and I love the encouragement of all these great people who spend their time helping people learn how to help themselves.  If you have interest in working out and  reclaiming your health and fitness, do it right.  Start out with FT and learn how to take care of yourself at whatever age you are.

So I found myself turning 60! OMG, 60?!  How did that happen?!  Where did the time go?  As a mother of two boys … 21 and 41 years old … I’ve managed to stay pretty young at heart.  But as I got closer to turning 60 I could tell that my body was not keeping up with my young heart, and my mind was totally ignoring the fact that I wasn’t gettin’ any younger.

So I decided to do something about it. I purchased a very expensive elliptical machine and started working out.  Well, OK so what - no big deal that I couldn’t stay at it for 15 minutes without feeling like I was going to die!  Was I really that out of shape?  In my defense, I must say that I have never been one to workout.  I have always been “skinny.” Growing up I suffered through all the mean nicknames: Sticky Vicki … Skinny Minnie … Beanpole.  So, all of a sudden I find myself carrying a bunch of extra pounds - threw me for a loop!  I learned quickly that I just simply did not know how to work out!  How could it be that this easy-to-use elliptical machine wasn’t doing the trick?  Not only was I not losing weight - I continued to gain weight.  Yikes!  So I tried a few exercises … yeah, right!  Not only did I not know what exercises were right for me, I didn’t know how to do them.  Now what?!

That’s when I discovered Fitness Together.  A new studio had recently opened in Hudson and it was within walking distance from my house (walk?!  Did I really think I was gonna walk there?!).  Could this be the answer?  Well, I decided that I was going to find out … so I gave myself a 60th birthday present!  I signed up for training sessions at Fitness Together.  It just seemed like the best solution to my ever-growing problem: my weight!  It was truly one-on-one personal training … no year-long membership commitment … no working out next to a lot of people that I didn’t know … just good personal attention to training without any distractions.  Just me, my trainer, and all the wonderful tools of the trade.

I could spend hours sharing my experiences through this past summer , with my trainers … all of them are wonderful!  But I’ll just cut to the chase: 

I started out wanting to just lose weight and now my goal is more than that. Now I want to live a healthier lifestyle (OK, so I also still want to lose weight!).  And it’s working!*  It’s really working!  I feel better.  I look better.  I know how to work out better.  Yippee!

I hope you will follow along with me, as I share, through this blog, my ups and downs, my trials and tribulations, my aches and pains.  Join me as I continue to move towards being a younger 60 year old … with a better body, heart, and spirit!  It’s gonna be fun!

Oh, and in case you’re curious …yes, I do walk to the Hudson studio!  And I also ride my bike there!  Awesome!
