    My name is Joy. I was born with myelomeningocele and severe curvature of my spine. I have had 35 brain and spinal surgeries which eventually led to me being in a wheelchair.
    I fought to recover and walk again with leg braces and a walker to no avail. I continued physical therapy for many years, and obviously it helped post-op, but unfortunately the physical therapists looked more at my disability rather than my potential—basically, they put me in a box and focused on my limitations which prevented me from moving forward. I became discouraged thinking this was my lot in life.
    My Mom, Dad and younger sister encouraged me to look outside the box of healthcare facilities. My sister was in college for a degree in science physiology and kinesiology. She motivated me to look into fitness training. Hence, my search began and I was fortunate to find Fitness Together.
    When I met Michael he looked beyond my wheelchair and disability, and saw me as an individual with potential. He connected with my dream and desire to lose weight and build strength. Eventually the reality of walking again became a new goal. This enthusiasm to help me was transmitted to the awesome trainers.
    Now, not even a year later, I feel amazing! I was cast for leg braces again after 15 years of not walking. I have dropped weight, pant sizes, and my upper body is getting more toned. Additionally my balance has radically improved through strength training. I know for a fact that I would not be where I am if it wasn’t for the incredible team at FT.     How much weight have you lost to date?

    I started out at 328 pounds. The last time I weighed myself, I was 189 pounds. So, in less than a year (April to February) I've lost at least 139 pounds.*

    What motivated you to improve your level of fitness?

    I decided to make a change when I finally realized that I woke up every day miserable - without anything to look forward to. I realized that I kept waiting for my fabulous life to begin. At that minute, I concluded that I should stop waiting and start living. I had to do something.

    To be honest, I didn't know what to do to get started. I followed a "points system" diet plan and was relatively successful, but then I hit a plateau. So I bought some 5-pound weights and ordered an exercise video from an infomercial, but I was frustrated because I lacked the knowledge and support to be successful. Then I found out about Fitness Together. The rest is history!

    How did you hear about Fitness Together?

    A friend told me about Fitness Together. I was feeling frustrated with my feeble attempts to work out on my own and she mentioned that she had just started working out with personal trainers at a local studio.  The more she told me about it, the more interested I became.  She encouraged me to schedule a free fitness assessment.  

    My trainers are almost like family now. Whether I'm laughing, crying, frustrated, happy, nervous, or excited, they are willing to share my stories and emotions. When I need to be motivated, they push me. When I need some hope, they inspire me. When I need confidence, they support me. On days when I feel too overwhelmed or exhausted to go work out, I still show up to my sessions.

    At Fitness Together, I've learned to push myself in ways I never expected and to accomplish things I never thought possible. It's empowering to have someone know what you are capable of even when you don't yet realize your full potential for yourself. One of my trainers always says "whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right."  It turns out that he's right.

    Are you able to participate in activities you previously were not? Do you have any newfound interests?

    Yes!  One year after starting my new lifestyle, I rollerblade and ice skate frequently. And now that I feel OK wearing a bathing suit, I plan to spend my summer in the water. I love to swim!

    I've also learned to enjoy cooking, thanks to working with Fitness Together's dietitian. She taught me that cooking, like working out, is all about learning the basics and then experimenting to find out what works for me.

    Fitness Together (FT) personal training saved me from surgery! I have been working with trainers at FT since August, 2012. They gradually built up my strength,endurance, confidence over time and continue to stretch me to better condition. Last week, I was in severe pain from what turned out to be a herniated disk in lower back. Neurosurgeon said surgery was going to be necessary but the hospital doctor advocated for more review and other options. When they came back to me, the comment was, you are in such good physical shape that we believe we can avoid surgery because your body strength will support other procedures.* I am 71 and the physicians commented that not many people of my age could manage because "bodies get old". Well, bodies get old but not necessarily weak, thanks to Fitness Together!

I enjoy helping clients achieve their goals and change their lives regardless of the limitations they may be facing. I was diagnosed with an endocrine disorder many years ago and it has fueled my desire to share my passion for overcoming obstacles with others.
    I have been an athlete for many years, I am a former gymnast and softball player. I am a runner, an avid yogi, nature lover, writer and traveler. I find organic living, mindfulness and meditation to be the best medicine for a healthy body and mind.
    I'm excited to be a part of the path on your very personal journey to achieving optimal health and wellness. Namaste.

    Hi, my name is Mike Workman. I've been a personal trainer here at fitness together for about a year. Before working at FT, I studied and completed my undergrad degree of Exercise Science from Bowling Green State University. I have a passion for fitness, but an even bigger passion for helping people in both fitness and life. I truly enjoy helping people in whatever ways possible, whether it be through weight loss, boosting energy levels, raising self esteem, or even becoming a better athlete.  Through my studies at BGSU and my certifications, I have learned a lot of different tactics to help people get their ideal figure. I love helping people achieve things they thought they could never do and showing them anything is possible with dedication and hard work. I always bring a positive, upbeat attitude to my sessions and motivate individuals in many different ways.
         When I'm not working at Fitness Together I enjoy outdoor activities such as Golfing, Snowboarding, Hiking, and Camping. Being outside and staying active is something that is important for me, not only for my physical health, but mentally as well. Through my training I enjoy teaching people the passion for exercise and how they can use it through their every day life.

These sports have shaped my future in granting me the ability to play at a collegiate level. Once my career as a college athlete came to an end, I found myself still craving an athletic and competitive drive . Through this transition I began a lifestyle change and found a deep admiration for the world of female bodybuilding focusing on the figure division. This sport has completely shaped my life to this day. I have embraced an overly disciplined schedule, following nutritional regiments, cardiovascular training, and most importantly the art of weight lifting and strength training to achieve the body needed to compete at a high level . With numerous years under my belt I have became a well rounded personal trainer, athlete, competitor and fitness expert when it comes to training in many aspects of fitness .

    .My name is Jennifer Toronski, and I have been a personal trainer here at Fitness Together for ten years.  I decided to get my training certification after the birth of my third child because I have always been interested in the health and wellness industry.  I started as a medical assistant but quickly decided I wanted to be more proactive and preventative about health.  Having been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid at an early age, fitness didn't come easily for me. As a result, I understand how hard it is to start an exercise regime and keep the motivation to achieve specific fitness goals. I really enjoy helping others go through their fitness journeys, becoming healthier together, and finding life styles that work for them.

    My name is Shannon Hamilton and I am currently in my mid twenties with many fitness goals and accomplishments in my pocket. I am a certified trainer through the ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association).  I began my fitness journey as a competitor, focusing on many sports such as, volleyball,softball, weightlifting, and track. These sports have shaped my future in granting me the ability to play at a collegiate level. Once my career as a college athlete came to an end, I found myself still craving an athletic and competitive drive . Through this transition I began a lifestyle change and found a deep admiration for the world of female bodybuilding focusing on the figure division. This sport has completely shaped my life to this day. I have embraced an overly disciplined schedule, following nutritional regiments, cardiovascular training, and most importantly the art of weight lifting and strength training to achieve the body needed to compete at a high level . With numerous years under my belt I have became a well rounded personal trainer, athlete, competitor and fitness expert when it comes to training in many aspects of fitness .
