The first and hardest step with any issue is acceptance. You have to accept that there is a problem and now you must take action to fix it. Sounds simple right? Wrong.

The phrase “ignorance is bliss” exists for a reason...out of sight out of mind. We subconsciously choose to not acknowledge our flaws until we get hit with a reality check we can not ignore. For me personally, a few years ago it wasn’t until I stepped on the scale after a summer of burgers ice cream and some other fine things in life that I was hit with reality check that I couldn’t ignore. I was ignoring all of the early signs: the shortness of breath after going up a flight of stairs, the reflection of my body in the mirror, and even the clothes getting tighter. Even after most of pants ripping, I still didn’t think I had a problem. I was starting to blame my girlfriend for washing my clothes in warm water and putting them in the dryer too long.

When I finally got on the scale just to see how much I weighed, I was in shock.  It matched the highest weight I was ever at. All these thoughts went through my head. How did this happen? How can I fix this? Now I have to start over!

It was rock bottom and a wake up call that I needed. I finally accepted that I let my weight get out of control and now I have to do something about it. Fast forward to four months of significant changes in my diet and learning to meal prep along with a workout program that included cardio and 25 pounds came off. I was proud of myself but that was just the beginning. Now it was time to see if I can maintain this healthy lifestyle and not let myself fall down.  I knew that I would have to keep myself in check. Years later I have maintained this lifestyle and the biggest factor in that acceptance. I accept when I start to slip and fix it right away so I don’t end up where I was a few years ago.

My advice to anyone with a similar situation is don’t ignore the signs because it can only do harm and dig the hole deeper. Be honest with yourself and accept the reality that way it will make your weight loss journey not as long and strenuous.
