Why is it important to warm up before I work out?

"It is important to warm up before you exercise to reduce the chance of injury. Warming up gets the blood flowing and prepares you for the up-and-down movements of exercise!"

Bruce Kelly
FT Media

"The warm-up is a good place to work on mobility, active range of motion and activation. All of these things will prepare the body for the more intense work to follow by elevating heart rate, lubricating joints and connective tissue, and literally warming up the muscles and nervous system."

Stacy Adams
FT Central Georgetown

"There are several benefits to warming up before exercise.  First, it increases muscle temperature which allows the muscles to contract and relax more effectively during your workout.  It also increases body temperature which increases elasticity, which helps prevent strains and pulls.

"Warming up leads to blood vessel dilation, which reduces the resistance of blood flow and strain on the heart.  It improves efficient cooling by activating sweating, which allows the body to dissipate heat effectively and avoid overheating.  And it increases your blood temperature.  Oxygen then binds to the hemoglobin less effectively, making it more readily available for the muscles which may improve endurance.

"Warming up improves range of motion through the release of synovial fluid which lubricates the joints.  And finally, it triggers the release of hormones responsible for energy regulation which improves your body's use of fatty acids and carbohydrates during your workout.

"Are those enough reasons to get to your workout at least 10 minutes early?"

Sue Teoli
FT New Canaan

"Warming up before workouts is important because it gradually increases your heart rate.  Personally, I jump rope and do dynamic stretches.  I find that just doing these basics make the world of difference in my workouts."
