What are some good exercises to help get me ready for ski season?
Dec 10, 2013
FT North Buckhead
"Skiing requires a great deal of balance and coordination. Muscle fibers are firing off at a rapid rate, and if you don't prepare the central nervous system it can't catch up to the speed of the movements. So, when preparing to ski, think S-B-P-T: Stability, Balance, Power, and Transverse movements.
"For stability and balance, you want to perform movements such as the Ice Skater and Front Lunge to strengthen balance in your legs. Progress to tranverse-rotation movements with your front lunge to improve mobility of your hip. For power, perform TRX Jump Squats and TRX Crossing Balance Lunge."
FT New Canaan
"Besides doing exercises to strengthen your quads, hamstrings, and glutes you need to incorporate balance exercises as well. Working with stability balls, BOSU balls, balance pads, balancing boards, and discs are key to strengthening your core and improving your balance."
FT Central Georgetown
"I work with a guy who was an Olympic skier. To keep him in condition to stay on the slopes we work a lot of his core stability and multi-directional movements for his legs to keep his ENTIRE quad strong -- medial, lateral and frontal planes -- as well as his hamstrings and glutes. We do lateral band walks, squat jumps onto a step, lateral bounds, knee extensions and leg curls. All of these movements are done with a focus on keep a strong, tight core and stable back. This keeps his core engaged throughout our entire workout so when he gets on the slopes, his body is trained to stay low and tight which keeps you on your feet and makes for a smoother ride downhill."
"KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Work on single leg exercises: split squats, Bulgarian split squats, step-ups, lunges, and so on. Develop strength, mobility and balance, all of which are critical to skiing better and more safely."
FT Basking Ridge
"Over here in Basking Ridge we think some good exercises to help one get ready for ski season are balance, agility and quad-strengthening exercises. Using the BOSU is an awesome tool one can use to improve all these factors to help tear it up on the slopes!"
