How to Have a Healthy Halloween
Oct 21, 2015
Healthy and Halloween, two words that don’t exactly coincide. After all, this is the holiday where buckets of temptation are at the ready. However, if you and your family are trying to live healthier, there are some things you can do to have a healthy Halloween.
You have to think of Halloween as almost the holiday pre-season. With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, which come with plenty of calories. It is so easy to indulge; you can easily sneak a piece of your kids candy or take advantage of the leftover bowl when no one is looking. Halloween is a good time to practice restraint. Try to limit yourself to just two pieces of candy per day. It’ll be easier if you make it a family rule.
Don’t Overstock Your Candy
Everyone knows that you want to have enough candy to hand out to all the kids, but this can lead to many leftovers. Buy less than you think you’ll need to avoid an abundance of leftover candy and the feeling of temptation.
Don’t Buy Candy
This is a tough one. You don’t want to be “that” house; you know, the one that the kids are avoiding because you do not hand out candy. If it means being healthy, then go for it! Rather than candy, hand out small Halloween toys, bouncy balls or stickers. Don’t worry, the kids will get plenty of candy.
Take the Long Route
What’s better than a nice long walk? Making sure that your trick-or-treat route is long enough so that you get a good active walk will make your Halloween much healthier.
Donate the Candy
Whether it’s to an organization packaging candy for troops overseas or to a house for less fortunate people in your community, donating candy makes you feel better emotionally and your body will thank you by not consuming pure sugar for the balance of November.
If you're living a healthy lifestyle, Halloween is a tough holiday to manage. However, if you take the above steps, you can have a healthy and happy Halloween.
