Things Men Need to do to Keep Their Health in Check

 

Although men and women are created equal, the same cannot be said for the health of both sexes. In fact, it’s found that men are often quite a bit less healthy than their female counterparts and also die approximately five years sooner, on average too. The good news is there are many ways men can stay healthy! In honor of June being Men’s Health Month, we’ve compiled tips for men to consider to monitor, maintain and even improve their health with a key focus on preventing disease and death.

Eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

Not only do exercise and proper nutrition make you look better and improve your health, but these beneficial practices also support a positive mental state. It’s essential that men focus on eating a variety of healthy whole fruits, veggies, grains and lean proteins, rather than fast or processed food, in order to supply the body with the right nutrients, minerals, vitamins and even antioxidants that nourish the cells and provide energy too. A regular exercise routine gives men the chance to sweat, overcome physical challenges and build functional fitness to help in everyday activities as well.

Find a doctor and see them at least once a year.

Men are much less likely than women to get themselves checked out, even when they are experiencing pain and other health-related symptoms. And not getting issues checked out can lead to much worse illnesses in the future. We encourage all men to find a doctor they like and trust and schedule an annual physical at a minimum, so that baseline measurements of blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and more can be monitored. And of course, once you have a doctor on call, you should be willing to make an appointment for advice or an examination whenever a symptom or concern (like chest pain, trouble breathing, change in bowel movements, etc.) arises.

Create a stress management plan.

Chronic stress, day in and day out can lead to many health issues. And typically, men tend to internalize their stress more than women, rather than getting help. Without a plan for dealing with stress, it builds up and wreaks havoc on the system, creating dangerous inflammation in the body and potentially leading to high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack and depression. It’s very important to find ways to alleviate stress in a healthy way, through spending time on a hobby for pleasure, trying gentle yoga, delegating tasks at work or even beginning a meditation practice.

Take charge of your health for those you love.

One of the biggest things men can do to make positive inroads is to start to take charge of their health to ensure that they live a long and fulfilling life, not only for themselves, but for the people around them who love them too. So many deaths are caused by preventable illnesses, and that means that making changes to your lifestyle for the better can truly lead to more quality years on the planet.
