What are Three Habits You Should Learn in 2016 to be Healthier and More Fit?

Faith McKay, CPT

Have a positive outlook on life. Always try to find the good in any situation you're in. By doing so it will allow you to see the good in people and see the good in every obstacle you encounter, even if the circumstances aren't ideal. This can help your mental health and improve your overall quality of life. Plus, everyone likes being around a positive person.

Take time to relax. Often times we get caught up in the craziness of life and forget to take time for ourselves. It's important to take a step back from life every once in awhile, and allow ourselves to enjoy the life we work so hard to create. Enjoy the small things in life and forget about your responsibilities for a bit.

Celebrate the "small" victories. A lot of the time we tend to be very hard on ourselves, especially when it comes to our physical appearance or abilities. It's easy to look at our end goal and feel frustrated or defeated when we don't see results right away, but Rome wasn't built in one day! Some things take time and a lot of hard work! However, celebrating your small victories and goals along the way will make the journey to your ultimate goal that much more enjoyable.

Get outside. By getting outside and living a more active lifestyle will condition your thinking to be a healthier and fitter you. If you stay indoors and are not living a very active lifestyle you will have a hard time finding the motivation to do what’s necessary to become healthier and fitter. As you get in better shape you will find that you can do more activities and in return enjoy your fitness even more.

Drink more water. Most people do not realize how much their hydration levels affect their overall health. By drinking more water and staying properly hydrated you will get sick less often and even change the way you look! Your body will even feel healthier to you and in return you will have an easier time being active.

Get Family and Friends involved. Being active is always so much more fun when you have someone to share your experiences with. If you are going to do something, invite your friend or family member to join you. They will thank you for it as they have probably been wanting to do something but just needed someone to go with!

Eat breakfast every morning. Eating a healthy breakfast can reduce hunger throughout the day, and help people make better food choices at other meals. While it might seem you could save calories by skipping breakfast, this is not an effective approach. Eating breakfast will kick start the metabolism and prevent eating larger amounts of food being consumed for the other meals.

Exercise daily. Exercising daily can have many health benefits while aging such as normalizing blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, improving lean muscle, and improving bone density. So whether it's walking, running, biking, hiking, or other types of exercises, try to do something active daily.

Plan. Preparation is important, especially for a healthy lifestyle. Having a thought out plan for what meals to have during the week or while at work will help to reach the goals you want to achieve this year. Setting a side some time every day to exercise can lead to a very positive habit.

Get moving! Instead of the elevator, take the stairs! Instead of circling around for the closest parking spot at the grocery store, park in the shade on the other side of the lot! Adding a few extra steps per day will surely lead one to feeling much better by the end of the week!

Keep hydrated! Try adding a full glass of water to each meal and one in between meals. Keep count of how much water you drink each day and make an effort to add a few ounces each day! There are so many benefits to keeping yourself properly hydrated, such as having more energy, keeping headaches at bay, feeling fuller for longer, and keeping your skin looking and feeling healthy.

A little adventure never hurt anyone! Explore the fruit and vegetable sections in your grocery stores! Put forth effort to add antioxidant filled foods to your diet. Antioxidants have incredible benefits on our bodies, most importantly fighting free radicals which damage our cells and tissues! Add a few extra berries to your yogurt or oatmeal, try an exotic fruit such as a pomegranate, and help yourself lead a full and healthy life!
