Getting Started With Exercise and Facing Your Fear

One of my favorite quotes is by John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy once famously stated, “There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.”
For over six years, my Fitness Together trainers and I have worked with many people of all ages. Some clients come to us in great shape, but want to work out in a goal-oriented program and within a safe and private atmosphere. However, many people come to my Fitness Together studio because they are unhealthy and overweight. A vast majority of these men & women lived many years of sedentary lifestyles. Many were fearful of taking the risk towards making healthier choices in their lives.
What is the risk?
Many people simply fear failure. They are fearful of failing at any attempt to become healthy. When I’ve met clients for the first time, many of them have told me that they have “tried everything,” particularly with respect to achieving their weight loss goals. My response is often, “No, you have joined everything, but you haven’t really tried.” My point is that many people don’t know how to make a true commitment to themselves and to follow through with it. In addition, many people who join a typical gym or weight loss program are often not given the proper support in knowing how to proceed towards achieving their individual goals.
Rather than be judged by others in yet, another, attempt at a fad diet or new infomercial-promoted exercise routine, it is a lot more comfortable for many people to continue to do nothing. Sadly, the health risks of inactivity and poor eating habits are too numerous to count.
There are some things that we can’t control in life, but there are many medical issues that people can avoid if they just take that first step towards living a healthier lifestyle. A person can reduce and/or avoid their reliance on medication for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and more… I have many clients who are living proof of successfully battling illnesses simply because they are exercising and eating healthier. At a wide range of ages, they are more energetic, more productive, more rested, healthier, and happier people!
If you need some advice or assistance on how to begin a health and fitness program, you should feel encouraged to take the first step and contact a professional. Regardless of your age, if you work with a fitness professional, you will more likely achieve your goals, and you will be surprised at what you will accomplish! …Add years to your life!
