frequently asked questions

Dr. Janet, I'm having more and more people use the HCG Diet, everything I know about it is bad news! Can you offer your thoughts on this?

A: HCG stands for the hormone Human Choriogonadotropin. This is the same hormone that fertility doctors give women having difficulty conceiving. It is also produced naturally by women when they get pregnant...HCG signals the brain to release more hormones that direct nutrients to the placenta to prepare it for supporting the growing fetus.

The HCG diet typically last for three weeks, and is often administered by a health professional. The individual is given an injection of 125 IU of HCG daily (or it is taken in the form of oral drops). The hormones are accompanied by a strict 500 calorie diet--thus no magic here, the weight loss is the result of severe calorie restriction.

There is NOTHING good about this diet. As noted, the weight loss results from a ridiculously low calorie diet that will cause the body to metabolize fat and muscle which will negatively change body composition and backfire on your clients once they gain back the weight loss. Furthermore, there are significant side effects from taking HCG injections: male breast enlargement, fatigue, irritability...to name just a few! To sum it up, all FT trainers should recommend against their clients using this diet and inform them of the hazardous side effects. This would also be a perfect time to educate clients about the facts of weight loss--by stressing the importance of targeting body fat (weight loss that improves health and doesn't come back) via a program of healthy eating (eat healthy. eat light. eat often)strength training and cardio.

Q: How long are your personal training sessions?

A: Each session is 45 minutes but we encourage our personal training clients to come in a few minutes before their session to warm up on our cardio equipment. After your session we suggest cooling down a minimum of 5 minutes or for maximum fat burning you can add in 15-20 min of cardio after your session. So, plan on spending anywhere 45-80 minutes at each personal training session.

Q: How long until I see results?

A: We assess our clients every 6-8 weeks. This is enough time to show statistically significant results for most people. Our clients who have followed our complete weekly plan and journaled their healthy nutrition plans have consistently seen results, including remarkable improvements in strength and endurance during this period. Like most things in life, the more YOU put into it, the more YOU will get out of it.

Q: How many times a week does the typical client work out?

A: This depends primarily on your fitness goals. Typically our personal training clients prefer to come in 3 days a week for better results. Training less often tends to slow down progress. Of course, clients that wish to achieve rapid results can come in more often to really accelerate their fat loss and/or muscle growth.
